yip sow in heat will do it....twice Ive come across it... first time we heard what went on from close range and the dogs wore it....2nd time I watched from a far...my two dogs had two pigs bailed,I called dog off top pig ,the boar and it went to help its mate on the sow which was 50-70 yards further down hill...I had hoped boar would piss off so I could get sow...he stood there....having heard what happened in earlier incident I called dogs off and went home...one of the few times I didnt have rifle with me.... the first boar, and I believe the 2nd was about to do same...waited till dogs busy then charged downhill into the fray with momentum on his side and scattered dogs in all directions....stuff that for a game of soldiers.

newbie here, I had a pig creep up on me once, I was sleeping on the ground one night after having the ponga tree snap that was holding my hammock up in the middle of the night (was holding my breath waiting for the bloody ponga to land on me but missed me thankfully) woke up in the early morning to see a large pig standing no more than 3m away, we looked at each other for what seemed an eternity but was probably no more than 3 seconds before it fucked off into the bush after lunging for my bang stick. no pig and dog still curled up fast asleep.

There is another situation that I dont see mentioned here to be wary of with pigs. Fighting boars. Ive had three incidents here. One was two boars fighting over a sow, and the biggest actually ran up and attacked the wheel of our tractor when we happened to drive onto the scene. The other two incidents were similar.
My partner and I were out doing possums to raise money for a europe trip, I had sub sonic .22 ammo. Was walking along a bush edge intently watching the trees for eyes, when movement about 30 meters in front of me turned out to be two boars fighting that somehow we had not seen or heard. The bigger boar turned and ran off. The smaller one, A boar of about 130lb, obviously had his dander up and hackles raised, started to advance on us. I got kathrin in behind me and started yelling at it as didnt want to try it on with subs. He just kept on advancing. Finally at 10 paces I closed the bolt handle and started to aim. Lucky right at that point he too stopped, slowly turned and walked back to bush.
The other was also a smaller boar that ws getting a toweling from a big guy over a mob of sows. We were after the big one as it was frankly, huge but as we crested a rise the smaller one, a boar of 150lb, saw our movement and decided to attack us. He was shot between the eyes at 10 meters at full run. Of course the big guy escaped and we were just in a fit of nervous laughter for a bit afterwards.
The tractor one was really weird, but the other two id explain by saying they were not aware of what we were. They were just worked up and looking for a fight.

well im no pig expert ....... just sharing really ........ a couple of occasions in pureora , first time navigating thru some pretty crappy bush dog ranging a little and we hear this squealing ...work our way to it and heres the dog chasing 2 piglets eventually catching one and running round with it in her mouth while it squeals its head off.....thinkin mum would have been fairly close told her to drop it as we didnt want to take on a dirty old sow in the confined shit we were in dog was well pleased with herself i was pleased she dropped it when told as up to that point she was untested on game and i wasnt sure if the excitement would take over. the second time we were climbing up out of a gut and i smelt this awful B.O smell (like a kingscross hooker that hadnt cleaned herself for a month....maybe worse) the dog mooched off to higher ground and disappeared in the ladder ferns and shit next thing this decent boar come barreling down past us (within 10m)with dog nipping at its heels.... neither boar or dog were making any noise i was too slow to close the bolt and safely take a shot so called her off again glad she stopped dead in her tracks when called.....boar would have been the size of a big rottweler so maybe 65-75kg (dunno im guessing)too much for my 17kg whippet cross think she would have got seriously fucked up if the boar had have run out of options and turned on her.

Keen to get into an area with pigs. The only time i've ever seen one was when i was fresh out of the infantry doing security lockups. I pulled in at a headland near a garbage dump. Jumped out of my security shitbox car, walkin' around with my maglite. I turn at a sound in the pitch black and light up a bit ugly head with tusks ripping open a bag of garbage.

Me: 'Ah fuck no!' (did a snappy 180deg turn and that weird walk you do when you're terrified).

A boar can be very dangerous. I recall a circumstance many moons ago in the south Waikato bush where our dogs were tracking a boar on top of a big hill in dense bush. Took us an age to get to, then move around the tops and became clear the boar was following the dogs who were following him - a big circle. He came rushing up towards us and father pushed me up a dead tree. As boar raced past couple of meters away with dogs barking like hell immediately behind him, the tree fell down - dropping a 9 year old into the scrap. Fortunately the dogs managed to bail him about 7-8 meters away, and the old man finally got to them. One in the head from the old jungle carbine and it was all over. Very frightening but...and terrfying that he was actually tracking us. Small to medium boar but 3" tusks undrawn - very dangerous animal.

I remember too the old man and mate on their horses meeting a big boar on a narrow bush track - and the boar charged straight into the horses. Really put the wind up them...He did no damage and ran off into the bush, but he wasn't afraid of anything.

On another occasion - written up in Sth Waikato newspapers of the day - the old man and dogs finally got to a very well known old boar in the district - one known to have killed 17 dogs. The blackberry gulley boar... He was a big bugger - a brindle cross breed with domestic bigs which alot of wild pigs there were. They'd been after him for several years but dogs could never hold him - but on this occasion they ran him down over an afternoon and bailed him in a big bog hole. Old man finally got to him - 320lbs and the head still has pride of place on my brother's wall 40+ years later. Again 3" tusks and the ease with which he killed good pigdogs means he'd certainly carve the hell out of an unwary hunter.

True stories ...Pays to treat a big boar with respect...
