Thats what Most would do in South island Highcountry huts . Cant speak for North island
Depends where the hut is for me. If it is quick and easy to walk to I hide mine in the bush. If it is out of the way I figure the people going there are there for similar reasons to me so already have better gear then me so leave my stuff in the hut under a bunk or something and hope no fuckwits come in. So far my theory has worked for me
I've never thought not to....
Thanks for the reply guys. I plan to heli in somewhere in Te Urewera next year. Ill leave some in the hut, to keep a bunk, and the rest in the bush.
Yea all the time, so long as it’s not a 5min access one that slimy buggers can get to.
yeah never worried about leaving gear in a hut although to keep a bunk is a bit of a different matter, i know i would be a bit annoyed to sleep on floor or out side when there is just a pile of gear on a bunk , i think you can expect it moved ;)
Gear on a bunk overnight i mean, obviously
You want have to worry about your pack. New Zealand will be stopping foreign hunters hunting in NZ
I've met some weirdos in huts, and people in the bush who I'm pretty sure were on the run. Also had a trail cam stolen, it was at least 300m as the crow flies from a track. So I'm pretty wary now.
always hidden it in nearby bush but left sleeping bag inside hut to show that bed was taken
I have left mine with a note advising name and returning date.
In other places we've stashed it in the bush and GPS the location
mate and i were up in the kaikoura ranges when in walked american tourist with the biggets pack i have ever seen. he even had 4 2 liter bottles of coke in it and i estimate it weighed 45-50kg. it had taken him 12 hours to reach the hut while we took 3 at a leisurely pace.
then he opens his pack and breaks out the portable dvd player etc and a dozen dvd's !!!
he had multiple cans of food but turns out didnt bring a can opener. very strange guy who started lecturing us on how hunting was evil.
Have and do and will do agian

Leave it in huts don't worry but most a walk from the road.
Mind you years ago somebody was flogging gear in the Kaimanawas ? and stashing it in cave.
At least I think that was the story others might know a bit more.
Yes back in the late 80's or there about's. Two guys were raiding huts, some on the private blocks (North Arm) and taking camping equipment, ammo etc while the hunters were out in the field. Occurred over the summer/roar until the police conducted a stake out and located the stash in a made made dug out into a hill. Can't remember if the two guys were actually charged? I use to have the news clipping as one showed a pic of culprits hideout. A extremely rare thing to occur i feel this type of situation?
For several social and practical reasons it’s pretty uncommon to have gear stolen from a hut. Keas and rats must have trashed more than all human scumbags combined.
Having said that, any stick books, chocolate or sweetened condensed milk left on the table would be at risk.
Totally agree with Bagheera.
I have had stashed gear in the bush & under huts to only have mice/rodents eat their way through some things - especially during a beech mast period a few years ago. So a good robust rodent proof container required.
It would have to be extremely bad luck that another person moved/took some gear left on a bunk while you were out in the field.
Have always left gear in the hut.
(In high traffic huts I don't leave shiny attractive things lying around in plain view. Knives, diamonds whatnot. Best someone not be tempted.)
I tend to pack my clothing before other people leave, if its been hung up or something - if you're going to lose anything it will be someone mistaking one of your shirts or socks for one of theirs. Honest mistakes I mean.
