Hope it gets left the way it is, a good balance already exists between land management and public access.

A total cessation of farming will see the country swallowed by Broom/Gorse/Barbary/Manuka and a plethora of weeds, there must be some middle ground.

Haven't read all the article as it is From stuff and since when do they get it right
But my gut reaction is from the pics.
The run that they show only happens once a year.
The tour company will only show the good stuff, so what's going to happen to the rest of the land? Will also most probably not run all year around only in the high seasons.
Is/can it be run at profit from a variety of activities? Dude ranch American style? But then you can only round up so many sheep so many times.
From what I can see they still will need to manage this station.
We owe that much to our pioneering fore farthers......are they also not the history of our country!

You said it well. Though I have to say for a Stuff(d) article it is remarkably evenly balanced. I didn't think sh_t like that could happen.....

Anyway one a more serious not, well worth putting some input in. If farming is removed the fire risk is certainly a potential hazard that would actually reduce public access rather than increase it, and the research into TB and controls they have done there sounds like it is very helpful (other sources as not mentioned in article)

They could release all our deer species and a few more on it and run it as a national game park. Would make millions.

Nah, instead of re making je coastal road from kaikoura they should have stuck a 6lane highway through it... well it's crown land already so makes it easy, no risk of coastal erosion or more rock falls

Good in theory but you can imagine what will happen once professional guides start dropping DOC big $ for exclusive use.

They did consider that but one of the high passes (Near the main farm house?) is a high enough altitude that it gets deep snow every year. There was no easy way to address access when it is closed due to snow. Distance wise from Blenheim to chch via that road is only about 20 kms longer than the coast road which is why it was considered for that role years ago. That idea does have a lot going for it. It is less windy / twisty (straighter roads) but more windy (High winds in exposed places) so if the road was up to the same specifications / standards as other highways it would actually be quicker too.
