Thread: Lizard- Hawkes Bay

Hi guys

Went to the Lizzard for first time on Saturday, and although we didnt see anything, it was a cool walk! Amazing place really. It would be a great spot for a quick after work mid week mission, and a good walk for my daughter when shes old enough to come out.

I have heard the place was 1080'ed a while back, and hasnt really had any animals in there since. Does anyone still hunt here? Is it still worthwhile going to?

Only ever been there once for a walk with my 4 yr old daughter. Didn't take the rifle.

Pretty cool walk up the big slope rock face, but to be honest it didn't really excite me as a hunting spot. I've never been back and probably never will, theres far better spots to go I reckon.

Yeah fair enough. Im new to hunting so I dont really have too many spots. I just go on google earth and look for spots I think might be good, but im probably in a stupid spot ha ha.

No spot is a stupid spot bro , if theres bush there chances are that at some stage a deer will pass through and when it does hopefully you are there waiting with you're musket!
Where are these far better spots you speak of Clint?!

Yeah true that. Wont see any sitting on the couch at home. Went up to stoney creek early saturday to find 1080. Bastards. That looked like a primo spot.

Exactly what you should be doing. Get out there and explore. Soon enough you will come across a good spot and you will have earned it.
In the mean time the walking will make you fitter and you will learn as you go.

Deer are very few and far between in that area. Used to be a few pigs but the pig hunters give it a thrashing from the forestry.

Cool cheers for that. Might just use that as a bit of an after work walk. Hopefully bump into something one day. Did the lakes on the other side get 1080 recently?

Call ospri and get the correct info, Kaweka put off till next year but they will give you info on that

Yes all the lakes area in the pines and next to them got 1080 about 3 weeks ago

So its true. Buggers. How long does it take for an area to hold deer again after a drop?

There's a 4 month recommended waiting time to start with.

It doesn't get all the deer, well not Sika anyway

It might kill a larger percentage of red deer in any given area, and it also depends on where their food is and their preferred areas to feed.

Always lots of deer feeding around the lakes.

The green rain of death would have got a few.

But like you said not all of them.
