    A long time between drinks

After a successful rabbit shoot on Saturday night I decided to put the Ruger 10/22 away and grab the Tikka 7mm Rem mag off the gun rack and head out for a deer hunt tonight, it was 5pm so I thought I had better rattle me dags and get cracking.

I pulled up in my truck at 6pm got out and started to walk to where I thought there might be something, I got most of the way through the paddock (walking quickly as I was running late) when I heard a noise over to my right so turning to see what it was I saw a hind barking at me with a yearling spiker beside her both of them peering over the fence at me.

They were approximately 80 - 100 metres away, I raised my riffle buy could not hold it on target as all I had to aim at was the head and neck front on. I dropped down on one knee and rested my elbow on my knee but still not steady enough so I tried not to look at them and slowly took my badlands pack off my back stood it upright and looked through the scope (perfectly still) excellent.

The hind was barking like crazy at me while both of them were staring at me front on head and neck only on offer so with a good rest on the top of the pack I took careful aim and squeezed the trigger aiming at the neck, I heard a crashing sound so walked over to the fence to take a look, Beauty the spiker was down and out the 165gr ELDX had gone through the front of the neck and out the back of his neck (dead centre) a perfect shot with no meat damage.

I put my hand down my right side to grab my knife but it wasn't there, shit I had left it at home (bugger). Just as well the farmer is a good bugger, I gave him a call and he was there in no time with a knife and I quickly set about cutting it's throat and gutting it. The farmer shouted me a beer, he, his mate and me threw the deer in the back of my truck and off I went (home by 7.15pm) bloody amazing.

You know there really are some good buggers out there, a really big thanks to these guys for coming to help me out I was so grateful

This is how I found it

I gave the head to the Farmer, it was the least I could do for him helping me out. Don't get despondent, I was wondering if I would ever get another one but a deer usually pops up when you least expect it. Good luck with your future hunts, you will get one soon

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I have had 2 long hard grinds out of the wop wops with big animals that bloody near killed me, you are so right after those experiences it is great to get an easy one. Mind you I am going back to the hard stuff again in another few weeks, it sort of feels like real hunting and will be good to spend a weekend with my son. As I'm getting older I do appreciate the easy ones though
