Looking for Goat shooting locations near Napier

    Hi all

Looking to find some suitable goat shooting locations near Napier. Perhaps a farm where they have invaded and are wanted to be removed. Trying to get the young fella his first animal. Have tried Panpac but that seems to keep drawing a blank.

    Kind regards
    Nathan

FWIW I enquired a few months ago and had it explained that many landowners now muster and sell off (ex) feral goats. Fair enough for them but sets the bar a bit higher for those in your situation.

Thanks for the reply. Have made contact with a local farmer who has a goat "problem" and we are now heading out tonight to see what we can bag. Still more than happy to recieve any other options, as one can not really have TOO much hunting ;-)

Sorry about the lack of photos but here is the story of our little jaunt into the hills north of Napier.
The hunt started out well; the boy spotted a bunny as we began our climb up the hills. The Howa mini action .223, being the smallest caliber we had, made short work of it. In fact, it was so efficient we didn't even need to gut it ;-) Let's just say that just the hind legs were recovered. With bunny in the bag, literally, we headed off up the hill. After a climb of about twenty minutes we crested the top of the first hill and what should we find but a mob of about 18 goats. They were on the move and although the wind was at right angles something had spooked them. The mob moved off and maintained about 250yards separation. We would have taken a shot at this point, but they were on the neighbor's property. We decided to wait them out, after about twenty minutes a nanny moved through the boundary fence, and the mob followed suit. They had now moved out of sight down a gully, so we climbed up the hill quietly. On reaching the top of the hill, they were unaware of our presence, and we were able to range them at 104yards. The farmer only wanted us to take one animal, so we lined up the 7mm08 Howa (yes it is a Howa club in our family) and took the shot. Father in Law was on the money and dropped a nice condition Nanny with a shoulder shot. The round entered on target and was partially deflected out the lower back. On the way through it completely liquified the heart, in hindsight, the 140g 7mm08 round was way overkill at that range. Overall a great afternoon out on the farm.

We love Goat, got the taste for it when the wife and I worked in Bangladesh. Best meat (other than fish) over there. Didn't even know we were eating it to begin with, lol.
