Mangelton Road - Masters Shelter Ruhines

Anyone been in to this place? On the DOC web site it shows a track in to the hut across farmland from the road but can't find any mention of the hut on their web site. Is it a private hut. And if anyone has been in this way is it a reasonably easy walk up the creek. Any info is appreciated. And i have to get out this weekend rain or shine.
    Cheers

Pretty sure it got pulled down a few years ago now. @P38 should know.
You're not confusing it with Sentry Box?

Sentry box was going to be my other option for a quick over nighter.

Last time I saw Sentry Box it was pretty fucked. I would not suggest the night in it. Parks Peak is your next stop and again the last time I walked past that the old hut was to be demo'd and the new hut was being built. It looked very snug and warm. This weekends weather will most likely see snow up that high so its going to be a long walk to get cold and wet plus its one of the tougher slogs onto the main range.

Masters Shelter is just that a shelter not a hut.

It has a roof and three of the walls are open to the elements.

That said you can drive right to it and it does make a pretty good campsite.

No deer around here but you can follow the track behind the shelter and climb the ridge to the tops.

Sentry Box has been repainted recently there are two sets of wire bunks not sure on mattresses.
Being an older type hut you have to keep the door open slightly to keep the fire from smoking out the place, so the hut is always cold.
Again you can follow the track and climb the ridge to the tops and onto Parks Peak Hut.

Both climbs are pretty good ones ..... about a 20 stop climb ......... well for this fat boy anyways.

    Cheers

Thanks @kiwijames and @P38 for the info. Will leave them for another time. Will go elsewhere. Just have to get out.

    Pome

Forgot to mention the creeks in this area are steep gorgy and thick as with all sorts of crap.

The bush is tight and steep and can be a very hard pace to hunt.

The weather could turn bad too looking at the forecast.

That said got into Masters Shelter and have a look around for yourself....... you just never know what you might find.

    Cheers
