    Mapping a new area

    Hey guys,

I will be moving to a new town for work at the end of the week and from all reports sounds like a bloody good hunting area for both deer, and pigs. Currently I'm looking at maps and areas where I can hunt but was wondering if anyone can give me tips on what to look for on a map to help me refine my search as there's a shitload of potential country. Do deer typically favor steep areas, basins, valleys etc and also does this change depending on the season?

    Thanks for any help,
    Connor

Buy Stalking the Seasons Round by Frank Saxton and some other bloke. It's got answers to all your questions.

Kooza thanks for posting those two links some interesting reading in there.
Cspence , MassiveAttack is right this is an excellent book brought it when I first started out, first copy bloody handy, I even went as far as adding colour photos of all the flora that deer like that the two had drawn, found this helped really get to know the names of plants and make identification a lot easier. You can do this easier today with the internet.
God knows how many rolls of film I went through doing this.

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack this thread but I'd be interested in purchasing this book off someone if they've got one?

Hi here's how I'd do it systematically:

    1. Get a good paper roadmap of the region. "Pathfinder" folding mas are good. They show names-of all country roads.

2- Get paper copies of NZ topo maps for all likely areas. Theres no substitute for planning and they show the context and lay of the land. Hamilton Map and chart shop has the best range locally.

3.Go to Doc and get maps of permit areas and boundaries. As well as' on the perm't page theres another mapping page with good boundary info which can be downloaded to GPs 'if computer expert Easiest online but a local office can be good. Ask about Doc land that not on the open permits.

    4. If you haVe any contacts for private land then re contact them.

    5. Goto WAMS NZ site . (walking access mapping system) This has location of public land and paper roads legal access as well as legal bondaries for private land. You don't want.to stray into no mans' land up there. keep your ear to the ground.

6.Then start exploring a different area each week. Try and walk the main access tracks and huts at first Record them on you GPS If you use one.
