My mate rang up today having been up in the Raukumara trying to pick off a stag or two. He said on the 2nd day he shot a big fat hind with an ear tag. Must have been a escapee but he reckons the nearest farmland would have been at least 15km away. I told him that some feral stag probably had her over for the weekend.
I've shot a red hind with a torn ear, where a tag would have been. It was pretty damn stupid too, which goes hand in hand being an escapee.
Think its actually illegal to shoot a ear tagged animal, no matter where it is. Remember reading it somewhere.
I have caught a few ear tagged reds on a trail camera a while back, if anyone is missing deer number 136 or 168 i know where they are!! :thumbsup:
Im sure a few got shot, lots of escapees around and red deer will go a long way from the nearest farm, 15km doesnt seem unreasonable.

Escapees are as cunning as ferals in no time.
Technically they remain the property of the owner, but that is observed by the breach in most cases.
I shot a nice roaring ten once up in my scrub when I had the farm, and it turned out to be one of my own that had escaped several years earlier. Seeing the tag took a bit of gloss off the hunt. :) He had only travelled about 2km, but I know that the deer in the area used to trek between the coast and the Puketois depending on the season, and that was about 10/15km.
Not sure what the rules are around shooting escapees. A couple of years back my mate who runs deer thought that escapees on a DOC block were open season, though the tag should be hand over to DOC. He said if it was his deer he'd rather the hunter just bury the tag cause he wouldn't want any shit from DOC. He reckoned too, what were the chances of ever recovering it, unless with a bit of lead . . . hahaha . . . . I have heard some of the more "domesticated" deer have returned under their own steam given the right paddock/gate set ups.
They are gonna get eaten one way or another.
A friend had a hunter contact him after shooting one of his escaped deer.
It had traveled over 45km as the crow flys threw prime deer habitats on public land, in less than 6 weeks.
Cudos to the hunters for tracking down the original owner :thumbup:

Maybe it's a deer conspiracy, wearing a tag hoping they wont get shot. I'm certain the stags have finally started to clam up a bit more round the roar as a protective measure. They're on to us . . . .

I know of one record book sika that escaped from a game park.. walked a couple of km and came back in through a deer trap on the neighbours farm. The owners of the farm were doing a cull and shot him thinking it was a weedy little red and now hes has his name in the record books. :ORLY: As far as i know there are still two more of these escapees still out there.. :thumbsup:
Escapees everywhere these days. Not a big deal.
Deer, pigs, goats...these are all fair game on public land. They have to be tagged and contained to be considered farm animals. I've shot a few deer with tags over the years, even shot a 13pt Wapiti in an area that shouldn't have had any deer in it...funny story (totally legit, shot on private land), but I still won't be sharing the details online.
Cattle and sheep are not fair game however, as these come under separate rules and require notifications in the paper etc etc...

Ive shot sheep before. But i had knowen them to be there for a few years and one of them i was doing a favour as it made shrek look like an anerexic tape worm. It weighed 70 odd kgs the fuker.

That's what I believed was the go . They fair game out of the paddock . I know a deer farmer had one of his elks shot just down the road from his deer farm . It would have been clear where it came from , but bloke who shot it didn't do any thing wrong apparently .Quote:
