MMy Hunting Days Come to an End

I started my big game hunting on my August 25 (12th) birthday in 1959 a mile away where I ended it this last Friday, and the quarry was the same, Pronghorn Antelope. My expert hunter grandson was there to see a crazy-long shot. The "goat" dumped forward onto his bottom jaw and fractured it. His left horn curl had been broken in a fight with another buck.

I made the shot of my life with my familiar FN Supreme custom 30-06 in a Brown Precision Pound'r stock. I turned 78 now and am hanging it up. It's been a great run, I have a lot of T-shirts, and now a freezer full of delicious antelope.

    Life has been good.

Looks like you have someone worthy of carrying that fine rifle for the next fifty years and keeping Pops freezer full too. You can always tag along and keep camp sorted so you still in the loop and not bored at home.it sure is nice to come back to well set up camp with Billy boiled and dinner sorted.

I gave the rifle to him as we walked up to the antelope. He's wanted it for 10 or so years.

I'm now the designated drop them off at the top and pick them up at the bottom. Our chukar hunting usually involves elevation changes of 2,000 to 3,00 feet in steep volcanic country. We do this deer hunting, too.

    AND, I'm a good cook!

@luv2safari do you happen to have a photo of the first successful hunt ?
It would be pretty awesome to see it if you do
Worth getting them both printed together and framed for that grandson

Cool write up, and an amazing gesture. And Im pretty sure that at 78 years young, your time in hunting camp is not over. Gonna be a pretty emotional day when the grandson comes back in to camp with an animal taken with the 30-06. Thank you for sharing.

Alas, the photo of my first antelope was lost years ago during a nasty divorce. She was crazy and mean.

She missed this chukar hunt photo from the same year.

He's the guy on the left.

That's been a good run - but never say never. There's always another day, and maybe a different way of enjoying it.

Good on you for giving your grandson something that he will treasure for life. The rifle will be special but the memory of how and when he got it will be even more so.
