My first stag during the roar!! Only an 8pt. But I'm a happy man!!
Stoked, first stag during the roar for me.
And my biggest to date. Sure he's not a monster, but he's got a decent sized body.
Im 6ft 2, 115kg and he was similar to me.
Started off at 830-9am, and let out a few roars to have several replies. Spotted a few spikers trudging towards me. Had lined up on a few, but let them go.
A bit later, I had a louder roar back and spotted several hinds held up about halfway up the scrub, no stag to be seen, but was calling out, and getting aggressive, spotted the odd move past an open scrub but couldn't make out what he was.
2 hours later around 11:30-12, he had shut up, and wasn't making any more sound. So me and a mate decided to stalk in, down wind, and aimed for about 50m above where we thought he was through the crunchy, fern and Manuka. When we first hit the scrub, we let out another roar to see if we would get a reply after being closer to him.
Sadly, No luck, so in we went, about 100m in, there he was, spooked and bolted about 5m before I let out a grunt... that was all it took, he froze on the spot, about 20m away, sadly all I could see was his rear end, as his front and head were slightly behind some trees. I lined up in the back of his spine and let my new 7mmSaum rip, severing his spine.
He moved about 3m, before I loaded up another and sent him to sleep with another 150g berger to the base of his neck and through to his skull, the sheer force of a 150g pill traveling at 2900fps was enough to dislocate his bottom jaw.
