    Newbie 1080 question

Hi all, im planning my first deer hunt and was/am looking at the Pureora's. i see that they're getting bombed at the moment according to the DOC website. ive read enough to expect lower numbers etc.. but am really wondering if its still safe or worth it to go at all. im not looking for a trophy (but wouldn't leave it behind ) and im guessing there are a few different views on the matter. i would rather try Pureora as a first forray than the other closer option (Whanganui) just on the terrain being a bit easier going. your 2c much appreciated, cheers.

When they say low deer numbers, zero is the number they have in mind. You will be safe enough wandering around in a bombed area and there will be plenty of 'trophy' animals lying around. Pureora is a wonderful piece of NZ bush to wander around in, but as a hunting area...I think I would look else where.
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy...I don't know and don't care.

Welcome to the forum Red. 1080 is nasty stuff and I am very much against its use. Determine from DoC which areas of the forest have had 1080 applied and when that was. Match that to the map of where you were intending to go. As Spook says, you may not find any animals but if you do go in and you do find fresh sign then that will be encouraging and the rest will be up to you.

Hi Red, welcome to the forum.
I hunt out of Piropiro Flats a bit down there, and know the area a bit. Was down there a bout a month ago, and the areas that DOC said were bombed, hadn't actually been bombed. My mate went into the DOC office a few days before we arrived, and the lady said none of the bombing had been done, even though the website said it had. Your best to get in touch with them in Te Kuiti and talk to them. We went into our normal sort of area and saw 1 and heard another 1-2. Lots of fresh sign and plenty of game trails about. All this was in an area that was meant to have been bombed only a month before

Choosing Pureora over Wanganui is interesting. Def more animals down there. When/where you heading into Pureora?

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

    Thanks all,

Sniper, the choice was simply terrain, access etc.. im only looking at DOC land at the moment, dont have many contacts for private.. and not willing to pay... yet.. ive still got a while to sort my self out. i wont be ready till after xmas. still have to buy some gear to be able to overnight. but hey if you reckon theres more animals in general down there i may have a second think.

Rushy, sorry i should have been a bit clearer, i meant safe to take venison out of the area. i don't really know whether to believe anything that comes from DOC (exclusion zones, residual poisons etc..).

you can dissect the lymph nodes in the jaw if there is pus in the lymph nodes dont touch the meat. there is a vid in youtube some where where an old fella shows you how to do it with a sika jaw.
