Curiously enough, I ran into GC's weekly JW-15 $1 auction and got one with GC scope and suppressor for $255.
Picked it up yesterday.
Now just waiting (not completely patiently) for NZDA range to open for general practice.
Are there any other options for plinking within reach of Auckland?

Re .22. Was cleaning it up yesterday. Man, is it rough as guts. Even rougher than those shown in the 'how to smooth out a JW-15' youtubes.
Gonna be interesting to see how straight it shoots.
1. The NZDA runs the H.U.N.T.S course which goes over most if not all of the essential skills you need to safely hunt in NZ, you also go for a goat hunt towards the end of the course. It would be a good opportunity to make some friends and connections which is a good place to start, people will be a lot more willing to take you hunting if they know you are safe and responsible.
2. My first centerfire rifle was a .308 and it was great. It will do anything you ask of it in NZ except not make a mess of smaller game, but that's to be expected lol. I currently have a .270 which in some situations is overkill but at long range it has better performance than the .308, I would suggest going for a .308 or 7-08.
3. I think 1 covers this.
Yes. Do the hunts course.
Yes. Get a 308.
Can't go wrong
Damn, I'm waiting for the NZDA range to open for general practice so I can zero / shoot in barrel.
Shot out there yesterday all excited just to find the range closed. Seems the calendar I downloaded is different to the calendar I know see on the site. Or maybe I can't read.
I seriously need to make friends with someone who doesn't mind me target shooting on their land...
Hunting, of course, woudn't be bad either. ;)
There's a general practice most weekends for Auckland.
Opens at 8:30 and closes at 8:45.
Opens again at 12:30 and closes at 12:45. Then everyone leave at 4:30pm
I was there. There should be a pdf on the website.
Maybe check next week after Tuesday.
I will ask at the meeting when the new range calendar is available online
