Hunting NZ seems to be possible on two islands. Is there a diffrence in climate, rain, temperature, etc.... between the Islands? Is there a need for diffrent equipment between the two islands, raingear, boots, cold weather clothing, ....... If I am not wrong you have fall in march, april, may?

Rain gear for the west of the south island!
NZ is all "temperate" but obviously colder in the south and warmer in the north.
North has Sika Rusa Sambar that are not in the south. South has wapiti(elk) Chamois Thar that are not in the north.
South island also has the friendly people and awesome scenery .
HS as much as it pains me to say this (because I am a North Islander) the South Island is the place to go if you are limited for time and want to have a really good look at New Zealand. Yes march is the beginning of Autumn here so the red deer roar is primarily middle of March to middle of April. If you have the time when you are over then hunting in the North Island is also recommended as there are target species that are not available in the South Island as VC has said. It pays to be prepared for a cold wet snap where ever you go as our weather is considerably changeable.
The south is where is at IMHO. Although scenery wise (maybe it's jsut cos my heart is vestest in it), Ruapehu is a must-see I reckon.
SI = less people, more dramatic scenery.
To put the rainfall in perspective, west coast of SI gets up to 7000mm (yes ! 7m per year), lower NI in comparison is about 1500mm
NZ bush is not to be taken lightly. Steep, muddy, cold, wet, lots of river crossings... Bloody fantastic, but be prepared :thumbsup:
Fall and Spring are relatively short seasons (50 degrees S). May probably seen as early Winter already, having said that ski areas in SI only tend to open mid to late June onwards.
I used to work for a car rental company and drive customers back to the airport. They looked at the population split of both islands and spent 2/3 of the time in the North and then 1/3 in the south when planning the holiday. Pretty much without exception they remarked that they split the time the wrong way round. So I've heard we have a North Island and one of these days I might have to have a look around it.
Don't forget that South Islanders need a visa GM and the qualifying criteria are quite stringent. HS, no visa required for foreign internationals so you will be right. Ooops this could be very misleading to someone that doesn't know me for the piss taker that I am.Quote:

Now come on guys I was kind by recommending the South Island to HS but if you keep this up I will seek down to Wellington and untie the cable. The tides will have you bumping into Chile in a month.
Maui should have practised catch and release.
If you imagine a horizontal line running through Lake Taupo, more than half of the population lives North of that line. When people here say "the West Coast" they mean the South Island West Coast. When they say "the East Coast" they usually mean the North Island East Coast.
It rains in the West Coast.
A lot.
All weather here should be treated as changeable, we have a predominant westerly/ Northwesterly wind, Easterlies are rare.
As Gadgetman said earlier, if you are here for the countryside most of the picturesque scenery is in the South but you've gotta be fit for those U-shaped valleys down in the deep South that were carved out by glaciers,
The North is more bush hunting.
If you can afford the time to do it, a lot of the tourists I've met buy a van (can get one for $2-3000 but it might be a shitter) and drive the country over 6weeks or so then sell it and roll on - if you're going to go to the trouble
of coming down to the bottom of the planet ya might as well give it a proper go.
Also the millenials/younger tourists these days start with a vague plan then check sites and talk to fellow travellers en route and tend to plan as they go - there's always an internet cafe near the backpackers accomodation.
With kiwis, especially in the smaller towns, just ask anyone and they'll usually help.

Great advice 308. Backpacker accomodation (in my experience) is really great. Cheap and cheerful, but it's good to start off with an open mind and not be the type with a short fuse hehe.
The South Islands a great place to hunt, its got wild rivers, huge glacier formed valleys, awe inspiring snow capped peaks that go on for miles..
But there's one thing you don't have.....

I cant find the maps that showed liberation areas in the South Island but DOC worked extremely hard to get the little satellite populations back to zero.
The Sika pop in the NI is spreading out fast too, its amazing where they have spread out to in the last ten years.

This trick is to have a hunting mate that lives in the other island.
Then you get to hunt everything :)
