Northy going southy

Hey guys, so im off early October to try my hand at chasing thar. Done quite a bit of hunting but nothing on the bottom island. More to the point any tips for me that might help out in my quest. Obviously done a bit of homework but it all helps. any suggestions on footwear? Currently drag around stoney creek rusa boots which have done me well. High ankle support ect ect. Lack in cushioning though. Are these sufficient for shingle ect? Heard the sourthern boys suggest a loose fitting pair of gumboots and thick warm velcro gloves[emoji12] any suggestions would be much appreciated.

No matter which side you're hunting it's normally a hard time of year.
Wet on the coast and windy on the eastern side.
Another month away would see better hunting.

Agree with R93 by mid Nov (maybe late) spring will be starting and they will be done lower getting feed.
Not sure about the boots, as I haven't tried a pair of them. But if they are a Bush type boot, the scree may cut the crap outta them.

They go Alright in scree.
Mine lasted nearly 3 years which is the best of any boot i have had.

If in doubt climb down the way u climbed
Up no matter how close the hut looks.

I used Lowa pro tibet boots for all my tops hunting up the Rangitata and in the Tekapo/Mt Cook area. Couldn't rate them highly enough. Good pair of gaiters is also crucial. Depending how high you are going, Early october may still see the need for some crampons just incase.

Pair of cheap sunglass's & a small tube of sun screen can be handy, carry plenty of water.

Glass, glass and glass. Find out where they are coming down to feed in the evenings and get close the next afternoon. Don't be tempted to climb after them in the morning, they can climb a lot faster than you can.

Any time of the year is great, except on your wife's birthday.

On the eastern side, there are a number of places they are already low. Stay out of any of the bigger streams in your 4wd, unless you have a driver that understands how Southern Alpine river systems work. Pay attn to the weather forecast and understand what it means to you and your area. It is already warmer than it should be in the mountains and the melt will be early this year.

Yea mate more than id usually hava go at. Caught wind of doc heli cull scheduled for 2 weeks after our trip so made the effort to take meat so it wasnt shot and left by chopper
