Not Really A Duck At All

Took the young fella out for a shot the other day , in company of a few other hardy hunter types. Sat on a nice pond all morning , 2 ducks to the tally.

The other guys headed away to jump-shoot a nearby effluent pond so we sat and waited for the escapees to arrive. And one did , so I killed it and left it floating in the water amongst the decoys. Then , it started playing submarines and reappearing . A couple of the decoys had a go at diving too - obviously a biggish eel had found the dead duck.

So , the lads returned , a piece of flax was scraped to fires and then a duck breast tied to it a-la Bear Grylls. and , after a bit of nibbling and nudging , the eel swallowed the bait and was dragged ashore , only to escape .

Not to be betean , the small boy threw the baited line back in , only this time he had a responsible adult - who shall remain nameless , eh Derryn - stand by with the 20 gauge...

Out came the eel , bang went the shotgun and presto - instant dead big fish. All 10.5 pound of it ....

Heres a pic of the boy and his catch

Actually it was a day of firsts for the lad , he shot his first spur-winged plover with a great incoming shot , which was also his first bird that he has ever shot , plus the eel. If anyone ever suggests taking that size eel home , skinning it then smoking it - please dont refer them to me . Once is enough , smaller eels are much easier to handle ....

    (posted elsewhere too )
