we might be at the same NZDA @Tommy - a few months in to the new financial year and still nobody putting their hand up for the secretary position leaving a fairly obvious empty seat each club night. not exactly what you would want to see from a club perspective. good to see a young fella in the role as treasurer though

Lots of blowing of cheeks and shit. The old boys club aspect of my local is a point of contention. It's how a certain circle go takahe culling without the rest of the branch even being aware that it was going on. Debating as to whether I stay or not myself to be honest.

Yes Ryan, it's the main reason why I'm not a member as I've that impression too. Anti-change, anti-semis, anti-rapid fire, anti-muzzle brakes - just killjoys really who unfortunately haven't kept up with current trends and developments and remain steadfastly rooted in the past.

As P.W. Botha once said, "Adapt or die*".

*die - referring to the club / sport dying.

When I was 16 I joined the Waikato branch of NZDA, they were bloody awesome. This was well before the Hunts programme etc. They had a hunt every month, a social meeting every month with a guest speaker. Really great bunch of guys.
I joined the Canterbury/Christchurch branch back in the late 1990's. The monthly meeting was correspondence in and out etc, basically a committee meeting that everyone went to, very strange. They did have regular hunts though, went on a few of those and they people on them were great.
But I haven't belonged to NZDA for nearly 20 years now.

Along those lines is there still a Wgtn Branch still. I left several phone messages, emails and nobody even came back to me, nothing so I gave up on them. I should have just tried the hutt branch, they sound a bit more dynamic or at least alive

Yep that's the one. Have had the odd nudge to give that role a crack, but already do a couple sundays a month on the range and my missus would be pretty displeased as I already work some Saturdays.
They need new members, and putting a barrier up is stupid stupid stupid.

Further to HnF discount, i think it be better to forget about that as any real fact. Even thou they saying you get a 10 p cent discount many wont give you any or no where near 10 after making some calls. If you lucky enough to be in a area that will give you something then you a lucky person lol.
HnF Nelson, Blenheim wont give you any. (fact is nelson wont even meet the comp generally )
Hnf Richmond may do you a deal but its like 5 p cent but depends on what etc.
HnF Kaikoura will give NZDA members a discount, again depends on what but seem to be willing to share ..maybe not quite to 10p cent thou .

Anyone else have local store willing to discount?

Got 5% off at the Timaru store the other day. I'm not sure if it's across all goods though, have a feeling firearms might be excluded.
Some of the other local outdoor stores do 10% though.. Smiths City etc.

Still, even at 5%, doesn't take spending too much before you've subsidised a reasonable lump of your membership fees.

Timaru H&F used to be 10%+/- with the old owners, but new ones are trying to squeeze a bit more money out of it to pay for the new store etc.. Though they have looked after the club itself with a few very sharp prices on club purchases, such as the game cameras for the whitetail research.

I joined as a teenager, found it to be a group of grumpy old folks and didn't get any benefit so I gave up on it. Since then I have joined just for range use some places but not taken part in any club activity other than range working bee's. Hunts courses seem like a good initiative. 10% discount seems like a joke, I get that some things would need to be excluded but...
Liability insurance is interesting, would be good to see more info on that

HnF Napier give me 10% (will want to sight membership) and Jeremy at Rivers to Ranges will also do 10% for those in the Hawkes Bay.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

Did they give a reason for charging newbies more?

When I was in Christchurch 20+ years ago they were still charging new sign ups like this. Think it was a setup cost. Dumb idea if you ask me as they are now reaping what they have sown. It was a strong club IIRC.

If they really want to boost membership, the first year should be cheaper, or even free.
