This is another 'how long is a piece of string' question, had my curiosity tweaked about hiking in to this hut on the Te Iringa track, DOC gives the hike time as 6-8 hours......
who has done it and approx what weight were you carrying in?
I consider myself 'bush fit' for a 57 year old (yeah right) but dont want to waste two days of a trip just getting there and back, is it well marked for a sparrows fart early start with a headlight?
I can do Clements to swingbridge in under 3 hours. Add another couple through to the hut. If you want to hunt Oamaru the poled route through Poronui is easier and shorter. Either way the track us easy as, could walk it blindfolded.
Cheers Nick, sweet as, thats what i wanted to hear......park up, sleep in truck, up at sparrows and carry in sleeping bag, hut clothes, food and hunt gear.....easy peasy........should get a decent amount of time for an arvo hunt and recce!!!!!!
Go via poronui, will take between 3 and 4 hours probably. If I boost and don't take breaks I can do it in under 3. Its all flat too so it doesn't take much longer if you have a pack full of veni. If you do walk in from Te iringa all the way to oamaru hut you will have walked past a lot of deer on the way! PS @Nick.m be nice to scouser, he's twice your age, add a little on to your track times to make him feel better haha swing bridge in under 3 is very quick.

So Poronui from Tarahua Rd end you reckon........makes sense, need some energy left to find the bastards!!!!!!!!
It's well marked so you can easily walk it at night with a headlamp on. That way you have a full day to hunt. Up early, shoot something, pack it out and back home in time to do the lawns!Quote:

Would be a long w'end jobbie, drive down from jafaville thursday after work and back sunday arvo......

Sweet mate, that will be worth it then allows you to get a couple of decent hunts in.
Nah just walk Clements road. Shoot it drive to it out by lunch. Rember tho always Identify your target beyond doubt and consider your fiiring zone......but we all know this... Don't we.
I've seen fairly young people (late 20's) do that walk from Clements to Oamaru hut and they weren't too happy at the end of it. Think that was the same guy you walked out with @Nick.m in March who lead the way in to retrieve the car from clements and park up at poronui to wait for the others to turn up.
Yeap thats right. We actually got a ride saving me and the other bloke about an hour, while his mates who struggled on the walk in were about 30mins behind and ended up having to walk the whole way out. Sometimes lifes cruel :yaeh am not durnk:Quote:

Is Oamaru DOC block and Oamaru private block 2 different things.. Have booked helisika fly in from 14th to 16th Sept into Oamaru private hutt.

Only at the planning and asking questions stage....but id be a right fukwit if i didnt take the advice of parking up at Pononui Taharua Rd end and doing the easier, quicker walk in....more time and energy to hunt!!!!!!
Hunted various places on Clements Mill Rd and will do in future, just want to experience a different part of the forest.....plus a heated hut with a mattress always raises my eyebrows (Maori wave)......oh yusssss!!!!!!

Have a look at your map, you will see where they are in relation to each. Can understand your confusion, they are on opposite sides of the river approx. 1km apart.
Oamaru hut, has to be one of the best. Hope you have a blast Scouser. Either which way you go it will be worth it! Hot barrels!

If your there for a number of days, would be good to get gear dropped at Oamaru then land and walk down from Boyd. A nice walk
