Apparently someone's been releasing pigs into the Port Hills for future shooting, although they don't comment on how the peacocks got there...

Pretty frustrating to know there's an over-abundance of game on my doorstep but unable to access it.
Looks like supposition at this point.
If it wasn't a malicious release of pigs, ie that they have bred in the area naturally, it's an indication of what might be nationwide if nobody owned firearms, and therefore little pest control happened.

See the pigs rub the trees at nicght that them peacocks are sleeping in they then fall out and the deer kick em out over the fence so high that it’s very sporting to shoot. There still very asleep so rather humane :cool:

Someone tried to set up a game park type arrangement in Landsdowne Valley around the early 90’s. I believe this turned out to be a flop so the animals were released (or fence cut) into the scrubland/gorse in the valley. I was told back then that Fallow deer and pigs were released.
A guy I trained at work used to shoot Fallow on his girlfriends parents farm in the valley, and that would have been pre 97 as I left that job then. Pigs on the eastern faces of the Port Hills weren’t necessarily recent releases, and are more than likely descendants of those from Landsdowne Valley.

went for interview with safari guide 20 something years back...he had fallow in port hills way back then
looking through his photo album saw photo of big "free range " stag...... I mentioned that I had lived in house 500 yards from the paddock it was shot in...some reason interview went cold after that LOL.
@Micky Duck if you read the article properly it says the pigs are rooting the ground. Sounds pretty uncomfortable but if that's what they're into who are we to judge. Won't increase population though.Quote:

wild game on the port hills -yupand guess what else is looming as a major problem for the CCC and E-Can-bloody canada geese an absolute infestation of the bastrds in the avon ,esturay ,and over in the wildlands formerly QE2 area.wonder which munchkin is gonna get the job of solving that !
I was talking to a hunter over 18 moths ago who would get both deer and pigs up there. Some very easy to get to-some not all. I got the impression they had been there for a while.Quote:

The Peacocks were released by a woman who makes hats for NZ trotting Cup at Addington Raceway. Again nothing to do with hunters
Not exactly the city part of Port Hills but there plenty of pig rooting evidence on tops above Little River
There have been a few pigs up the top near Gebbies Pass some years back and all that would needed is exclusion of honest hunters for them to build up. The article does mention the past populations. No need for any new release.
I dont know much about controlling pig numbers but a start might be to facilitate permitting of hunting with dogs in the private farmland, plantation and small areas of reserves so a trusted team could range wherever the pigs are on the day.
Fallow and goats are probably easier to control ( never heard of goats in that area) and again probably what's needed is permission for a a contractor to cover the area without boundaries which might be what the informant had in mind that they'd get the job.
The photo under the Bush isn't pig damage. Unlikely for deer to build up to such levels close to town either (and falllow live on grass) so probably what they really need is a stock proof fence.
