    One for the Northlanders...

I think it's fair to say that we are not exactly blessed with land that is easily accessible for hunting, please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm lucky that I have access to three small farms which have been pretty good for rabbits and turkeys, plus I can shoot ducks over small ponds at one of the locations. I've also been out with another forum member chasing goats on the DOC lands around Whangarei - good fun, but bloody hard work at times! Is that it, private land and goats on DOC land, or am I missing something? I know there are pigs in some DOC areas, but don't think they are a realistic option if you don't have dogs. Do you Northland-based people travel south often for deer hunts?

I'm not asking for access to your land in this post, I couldn't cope with the online lynching! Just wondered what you are all up to and how you get your fix?

No deer in Northland - haha well not many (quiet)
But really deer are south of us - woodhill fallow ballot is worth while for a day trip (just closed for the year now)

Some of the private forest blocks have pigs and the are run by the clubs I think (dogs only if I'm right) for access - I don't run dogs so this maybe wrong; but I'm sure a manager said certain blocks are for pig hunters
Otherwise some allow access by permit for goats

That's all of the doc open hunting areas in north land pretty sure. Last I heard doc shot out 200 odd sika deer in russell forest a while back so they can claim that the entire region is tuberculosis free or something along those lines.

Apparently there used to be a good amount of goats in the north eastern part of tangihua forest.

Don't think I will bother much with northland blocks if I get my license. All of the good blocks seem to be near taupo.

It was in a stuff news article. Doc were wanting to buy some usa military night vision goggles so they could shoot them out easier.

The problem with goats is that everyone goes and shoots 30 of the things at a time, so the areas that had good numbers don't anymore.

There's an odd attitude to them as a game animal. Fair enough if they are competing with deer, but many of the North island spots they aren't.

Thanks for the replies. It seems that my opening post wasn't too far off the mark. Dense bush and stinky goats

    Hi new to the site.
i have been to tangihua forest. Been told to enter on the tangihua road side and fallow the track till you get to the ridge and come off there.
Still having trouble finding goats... Is this correct.

    Cheers

Or the other side of the forest but they are where you find em. The northern end always had plenty though much of it was too steep and nasty to make for a good day. Also the dog trialist cocky, Murray, at the northern end rounds them up and sells the every time they get to reasonable levels.
Its a nice walk and amazing views if both coast from the very top so treat that as the target and if you get a goat or two its a bonus you could always stay at the hut too.
