Options for poll on meat use

Guys, I'm interested in hearing what you end up doing with the animals you hunt.

So, if we run a poll (? maybe one each for deer, pigs and goats) what options should the poll have:

    Human consumption
    Dogfood
    Human + dog
    Leave it in the bush

Any other options you think should be included ?

Id like to think nobody would deliberately kill something with no intention of using any part of it, with the obvious exception of necessary culls were it is not practical.

What exactly are you after here? (with the poll)

Options for poll on meat use

Would you have an 'amount used' eg back steaks, back legs, everything etc
If my work annoys me, I cull them

VC, agreed, but I in reality I think there are people that hunt and do not use the meat, probably more so for goats than deer ?

Most deer hunters probably take some if not all of the carcass. So as per Rich007 suggestion, for deer a better poll might be which parts do you generally tend to carry out...

I am interested specifically in how many hunters use meat from pig and goat hunts for human consumption. It's purely curiosity on my side.

Well for me Goats generally are easily recoverable so they get mixed with whatever Veni/pork for sausages unless its a billy then it stays were it fell.

I am with you on that VC. Seems pointless unless part of a cull.

Re: Options for poll on meat use

Anything up to goat gets done for dog tucker. I eat goat sometimes but depnding on where im shooting it gets used for dog tucker or pig bait if recoverable. Where i was this weekend there wasnt a shot under 300 meters and recovery wasnt an option but i was there to cull and check young pines. Veni or pork all goes in the freezer if capable normally wont pull the trigger if i cant get the whole thing out. When i was down south i found three deer withbthe back wheels and back steaks gone and the rest there to rot . Was 150meters off a track that was less than a k from vehicle access and found a deer made into a pack in wamiha on a track that had been left there for a couple.weeks full of maggots what a bloody waste

I eat what I shoot, I try to waste as little as possible. Also, I give a lot of meat away.

    Venison

    Sambar
    • Backsteak
    • Corned Silverside
    • Salami
    • Bacon (occasionally)
    • Sausages
    • Patties
    • Casseroles
    • Stir-fry

    Fallow/Red
    • Steak
    • Mini roasts (netted knuckle)
    • Roasts (yearling hindquarter - deboned rolled/stuffed or just as is)
    • Racks
    • Chops
    • Schnitzel
    • Casseroles
    • Stir-fry

    Venison mince
    • Pasta Bolognese
    • Lasagne
    • Chow mein
    • Swedish meatballs (50-50 mix venison-pork mince)
    • Kofta’s
    • Shepherds pie.

    Goat

Note: usually whip the back legs off and loins. Front legs tend to be fucked if not head/neck shot.

    • Curries
    • Roasts (nanny/kid hindquarters)
    • Bacon wrapped loin.
    • Stir-fry

    Rabbit/Hare
    • Braised back legs (Slowcooker)
    • Back steak
    • Rabbit/Hare Thyme pie

Ducks, Geese, Peafowl (hens only), pheasants, cali quail
    • Breasts
    • Roast (occasionally roast whole w/ orange juice - Cali quail always whole)

    Pig

If I had more of an opportunity to hunt/shoot pigs I would be bringing them out whole. Love pork.

Apart front the odd quarter roast (wild pork) we get given, a lot of the pork I eat is purchased.

    Awesome stuff Raging Bull!!!

I don't get out as much as I'd like so eat pretty much everything I can, obviously under the instruction and help of you lot Ask Dundee - I was wanting to eat everything we shot (other than possum!) that weekend!!! Insides of the rabbits and hares go to the dog, other than that I'll get it into a pie or stew or curry.

    Yup, starting to agree

RagingBull, tx for the detailed reply. If other folks could reply along the same line about their usage it would be great.

Deer if taken whole the entire animal is used. Mostly steaks and mince with the odd roast and have done the odd corned veni... when money isn't too tight Salami and Sausages
Bush deer hunting I bone as much as I can carry, usualy bone out the rear legs less the shin meat, back steaks, bone out tops of the front if its not stuffed from the shot

Goats I take whole if taking them (do some culling where its not practicle to take them) and do chops and curries and have had some goat bacon made, wasn't to bad. Rest used for dog meat.

Pigs Roasts, mince, chops at this stage, not done bacon but will at some stage

Rabbits and possums have been taken for pig and dog food but mostly left as its been pest control, Have done a couple of rabbit pies

Dont do much bird shooting but have eaten Pukeko, ducks, phesants etc
Fishing ... Hunting its all good

    Deer.. no such luck yet.

Wallabies - usually just whip the legs off two or three each time we're out, then tidy up and roast the whole leg, nice and easy. Feeds 2-4 depending on the size of the leg.

Goats - usually bring one or two nice young eaters home each time, using the legs for roasts and the rest of the meat for casseroles and stews etc.

Bunnies/Hares - bring the occasional one home to throw in a casserole, but usually just leave them.

Had a clean-out of the chest freezer recently and filled a box to send down to my brother.. 12kg of mixed goat and wallaby legs
