Overseas hunters

Hi guys.
Have a couple of mates here (USA) looking to get to NZ in 2017 or 2018- they are set on wanting a red stag.

Now I was pretty lucky to always have a few honey holes around and did a couple fly in trips each year. I don't have access to those places now as haven't been around and a few people have moved on.

Two questions:

If you wanted to give them 10 days hunting with a good chance of a stag and a possibility of a tahr or Cham how would you structure it? One area for 10 days fly in say South Westland or would you be picking a couple of specific spots for day or overnights and then a fly in if weather works. That way if it was shit we could get behind some pig dogs or go fishing.

Secondly, Feb March is out for me so would have to be early April unless you think January might be a better bet? Need stags in hard antler.. or later than May 20th. When would you take them?

No we were probably more likely to stick to public land. Just trying to decide the best way to spend our time

I would spend 10 days hunting round lake Lyndon area or any where close to chch, will prob get a 25 point + stag, a good Cham and probably a Tahr too

No need to be a dick he's not asking for anyone's hunting areas.

And I'm from up north so I won't be able to give much advise but get into it in April. Stags will be in their rut

It never ceases to amaze me how everyone in NZ sees American hunters as stereotypical fat yanks who pay for their hunts-this isn't always the case and more often than not its just plain incorrect for American hunters as a whole. How do I know this? Well I was raised in America and I have never spent more than the cost of a permit on hunting animals nor have I ever used an ATV to access hunting spots, is this just me? No It holds true for a large majority of hunters that can't afford to go overseas for hunting.

When people come on here and truly want to hunt "The Kiwi Way" they get ridiculed and very few people want to overlook the stereotypes and actually help them.


Ok, so Im no expert on hunting nor do I claim to be but If I wanted to have a chance at shooting all three and truly experience NZ bush bashing and open tops I would suggest you guys go to Karangarua on the West Coast. You guys can stay at Cassel Flat hut and hunt any of the side streems for Chamois and the bush holds reasonable numbers of deer but it can be steep and thick bush. You guys can even shoot Tahr on the Tui flats and if your adventurous you can continue on to Christmas flat hut and shoot good numbers of Tahr on the tops.

If your not too fussed about the roar maybe a winter hunt after may 20 would suit better .......if they don't mind the cold might not be as busy (hunters in the bush) as april

It's unfortunate that on a forum with so many good bastards you'll always get a fuckwit like DLW

I wasn't asking for anyone's spot. I was asking how to get these fit and experienced guys the best time on their trip.

If it was just me I would day hunt a few different spots over the trip. And by that I clearly mean put the rifle on the wing mirror and shoot a 25+ point red.

However, these guys it's a trip of a lifetime and I want to deliver just that

I would find an area that holds at least two of the species targeted and use the ten days consecutively

Deviding the days hunted by the animals desired only gives three and a bit days per species,not very long to get aquainted with any area on public land unfamiliar to overseas hunters.

I would jack up a Hut based fly in trip in the Southern Alps,have a talk with a Helicopter company for areas they recomend on public land.This is what we did last Christmas and had a Ball.
