What DoC land there is has restricted/no permits and limited animals which are subject to culls in any event, what Auckland Council land there is has no access/also subject to culls. Hunuas in particular are subject to pretty ruthless ground control hunting. Very little moving up there in terms of goats or pigs these days even if they let anyone back.
Formerly rural areas like Drury are getting towns the size of Napier parachuted in over the coming decades. Less space for animals, too close to town to shoot, farmers selling up etc. etc.
That's life in the big city. Still a lot of public land a short drive away and as ButcherBoy mentioned above still a bit of private land that can be accessed with patience and a good attitude
