Plan B,s
Hey guys was supposed to be back from the hills but due to unforseen circumstances haven't even left yet but the bags are packed, rifles sighted in was looking to head to cook/tekapo area but the weather looks a bit dodgey at the mo so im thinking if we don't get there mite hang a left & go up the Ahuriri ...just wondering if there is a locked gate or can you drive up the valley to the huts ? . Cheers.

There is one hut you drive past on the way up. The gate is locked about 3-4 k before shamrock hut.

As Stug said, you can drive to Ahuriri Base hut, and a short way past the hut to the road-end and locked gate. Trying to get around the gate or drive further up valley is a strict no-no.

Head to the Quailburn campsite/old woolshed thing, walk up through the trees and up onto the tussock and you're on the tops of the true left of the Ahururi, this way you have altitude already and can scoot up the valley with some height on your side, take a tent.
Edit to add: Come to think of it this time of year you may run into a bit of snow doing it that way, maybe not.. Its a good way to hunt it in the warmer months anyhow

Actually, probably a good chance of snow... This photo was a couple years ago, early May. Sitting up high on the true left, tops behind are true right of the Ahururi

@Boaraxa, have a look in how much snow the Ohau ski field had in the last 24hrs, maybe no "much" snow at river bed but sure snow not far away from it…
