    Poacher caught

    On camera by land owner.
    In today’s Otago Daily Times.

Hunter from Queenstown it seems, shot a fallow buck, kept only the head.

But also got loss of rifle, boat and a 250 hour community work penalty.

    Good shit.

Reading the report, it sounds like he made his situation a whole lot worse by lying rather disingenuously.

Curious to know what cameras they use.

My mates caught poachers on their block about 3 weeks ago... that was red handed, face-to-face. Part of the problem for them is it’s a bit of a lottery as to how the poacher is going to react. They really need decent cameras, as every camera solution they’ve tried so far seems to be a complete waste of money.

Was it just loss of rifle, or loss of license?

Used his boat to sneak across the Clutha river to get to where he was poaching.

No mention of his ‘fit and proper’ status re his FAL

If he did not lose it, renewal may be a bit more challenging. But there is also the potential for him not having had a license to start with....though the presumption is that he is licensed when you read the article. The last comment was that the boat and rifle was siezed because Judge Smith said she could have fined McElrea at least $20,000 but did not believe it was a severe enough response. so from that the boat was not just a dinghy.....

No time for poaching, deserves everything he got and in my opinion poachers aren’t fit and proper and should loose there FAL

sentence is definitely up there especially when most others caught get a $200 dollar fine , wouldn’t be surprised if he appeals the sentence.
Always wanted to have a look in that block , wonder if he’s climbed over a fence onto the private land or if its simply marked on a map as the boundary?

Just over the hill from here. His family owned our farm back in the day. I wonder if there was a bit of "im entitled to hunt here because we always did back in the day" thrown in there.
