It was a really positive story. True Free Range Organic. No chemicals or pollutants or hormones (Apart from the odd 1080 drop...) If there were more like that perhaps Firearms license holders would number more than 1 in every 19 New Zealanders......(just over 5% of the population)
Yeah it is, but its all abit B/S about fills the freezer for 2 dollars. Non Hunters might think its a cheap and easy way to get meat but we all know its not.
Hunting costs a arm and a leg, all the gear we buy for it costs a forture when you add it all up.
Each trip costs you in gas, supplies, shit load of hard yakka, time , in the bush and afterwards. Wear and tear and replacement boots, packs, clothes, gps, beacons, first aid gear etc.
Shit, it costs me between 50 and 70 dollars a trip in gas, supplies,other little costs, 2-3 dollars a round you use. Replacement battieries for the gps, freezer bags etc and sheer effort.
Hunting DOC land with low numbers of animals might be 3-4 trips before you shoot one.
That ends up a darn costly animal, you be better of money wise buying all your meat at the supermarket.
Of cause thats not why i hunt, theres more to hunting than getting meat., alot more.
Some people just dont get it , i suppose in a way the article did say theres more to hunting but alot will glance at it and think its a cheap way to get meat but the average guy hunting DOC land tknows heres nothing cheap about it but we hunt for alot of different reasons than just that.
Of cause if you dont make your own small goods, and heaps dont, that costs you a small forture as well. It meant well, but 2 dollars to fill the freezer could of worded it more fact based
yes and the govt odesnt see someone "filling their freezer" feeding their family and enjoying their lifestyle they see someone not paying enough tax..... they see all that gst they are missing out on by a family not buying food but rather hunt and gather farm and barter.....

Even Mrs MB raised an eyebrow at that statement, and she doesn't know the true cost of my pastimes. For the money that I spend on fishing, hunting, boating, diving and associated costs, I could probably buy whatever I wanted in the supermarket, but where's the fun?Quote:

Interesting comments regarding cost of hunting. The gear and time to go hunting is like any outdoor hobby really. Think of the cost of Mountain Climbing, Tramping, Mountain Biking or anything like that...those guys spend as much time and money on their hobby as we do, but none of them come home with food. If I wasn't hunting or fishing, those are the activities I'd be doing and I would have to buy my meat. On that basis I do consider wild meat to be a considerable reduction to my household budget. Of course I do get how someone could easily be misled by the article.
Looking forward to the seeing the show, its ethos fits with mine.
