Ever New Zealand pays for the doc huts in taxes so we are getting ripped off they need to stop building huts that worth millions of dollars they going to replace the Oturere hut on the tongariro Northern circuit as the old one is 50 years old most new Zealand houses are older than 50 years. Mite be time to look at a light weight tipi tent with a fireplace

I agree hunt08 DOC are often guilty of building monuments - huts way over priced when one sees $400,000 spent on new hut- well bugger me I bet a half decent Carpenter could build a hut with the same no of bunks for $150,000 using ply corrugated iron etc what does one really need out there - last two huts I had anything to do with in DOC one could have built a decent hut for the cost of the bloody Architect DOC just had to have - luxury can we afford that no -- and then it has to be culturally sensitive and sensitive to the surroundings and fit for purpose so add thousands to answer those basic common sense questions but no more thousands on Consultants - by the time they finish the tax payer user of the Public estate could have had two huts

Just some bureacrat at DOC trying to make themselves look good in meetings.

The last newish DOC hut I stayed at was the Lower Caples. All the fasteners/binders were stainless, which immediately adds 3 times the cost. This is a back country hut at high altitude, no rust!! What are the civil servants thinking, the fasteners will out last the timber.
