For those that like to work from temperature, here in the Kaimai's the early morning temperature has dropped to 9 degrees from the usual 12...this is at 200 metres ASL so will be way colder up on top...from my experience the temperature will drop and then there will be a warm period and then a sudden very cold spell and at this point the stags will go strong...because I am so deaf now I have to drag the wife outside to listen if any stags are roaring as she has excellent hearing, but sadly no sense of humour...although this year I have my $6500 hearing aids, so I will try them out on listening for stags...so far all I have heard on them is bull shit from humans so seldom wear them.
Might wait a bit until the rush is over. May be too many people in the hills for my liking. Especially after last years non event.
Shot my 12 on April 10th,5 years ago.Roared 2 in the night befor. What a great pass time to get yr heart racing.
20th March I start and have shot 3 on that day in the Hauhangaroas and the latest was a red chasing a hind and roaring on 18th July 2011.
If antlers are hard and a hind is cycling stags will roar.
Recken its going to be a little earlier this year. Its all on when the hinds cycle, been a good winter. hinds in good nick tend to cycle earlier. Always been bit average around here in Doc land.
a;lways some action from 17march thru to 1st week of april then they just shut up. (areas i hunt anyway)
Always heard some around the 20th, and tends to go off for a 2-4 day window at end of march. recken this year its going off around 23-28th .
Hope to get another like this one

Yeah im going to completely avoid open doc land and focus on restricted land if possible for the roar period (may not get a spot in the end). Not keen on running into other hunters, some probably non sober.
Last year during the roar and lockdown my grandson stayed with us as part of our 'bubble' and he was trapping possums for their fur, he told me of the stags roaring near his trap line, went with him one morning and he had three stags going for it on a scrub face...as I cant hear them clearly I had him point in the stag's direction each time it roared...I was so tempted to send him in with the lever gun but didn't want the headlines in the media if it turned to shit...there was also the difficulty in getting it out and processing it.
Here 'tis. Shot him in close proximity to where I chased a roaroaing stag around a couple of years ago. Maybe the same stag.

Shot him in the creek about 2 thirds down in this pic, looking back from carrying him out.

Got 23rd-29th off then 3 weeks off from 6th April. Can't wait. Will be in Lower Greenstone early April then a couple weeks to poke around a few other spots.
Heard one roaring this morning on a private forestry block. :-)
My niece just shot a 20 pointer last week,a real grand daddy of a stag. Not a nice set of antlers, not a wall hanger.Photo on face book somewhere.
Was out on Saturday in part of the St James, plenty of fresh prints were I went but saw no deer and heard no stags roaring.
Seems way early for sika to be making noise to me - usually the peak of the rut I find to be around the 14th of april in the kawekas & kaimanawas
Was in there last week im picking will be the same this year, no scrapes or wallows so still early days yet
Your on the money mate... love it, people say already they herd one last week... all they herd was an early hunter trying their best :)
There were three or four going well overnight (13-14th) - in the same place as every year at this time - as I passed through to my usual spot, Ruahine. They quietened down at first light around 6:15AM, but in a weeks time will be lively all through the day. Good luck to anyone who wants to climb down to them.
A few hundred metres away and the change in altitude pushes things back to the start of April. I've seen very little variation to the pattern of roaring for date and location for this roadend over the past 8 years, less than ± a weeks change. As always it is helpful to get to know your area for scheduling trips.
I was standing on the lawn last night listening to a couple roaring, usually a week or two early here though.
My niece shot this grand daddy 20 pointer last week.If you know where this is area, dont mention it on here.Attachment 162823
i would say the roar will peak around 6-7 on public land around here, be hard hunting in places because its been so dry. The feed has been ok in places so animals should be and good condition.
It will be crazy around Gisborne with that Easter hunting comp on
Just came out of the kawekas and quite a few stags were still in velvet. Did hear one heehaw
Heard half a dozen roaring in the Wainakarua today two pairs fighting

stags are immmature for 1 year until first spikes, then are deemed Mature... ohh ok.
well its nice to see so many mature deer being shot in nz past few years, loven the velvet matures too
certainly looks young an immature
In my experience the stags will roar when the hinds are in season, a good cold spell of weather can make them more vocal and aggressive, but basically its all down to hind health and their scent to get on with business.
nah bro...not what was said..... and yip velveties get HAMMERED over here,it becomes a race to get in first, just incase someone else beats you to it..the wait till the roar thing seems to be going out of fashion.... its a crying shame reallly .... sad in some ways but entirely legal over here.
to each thier own at end of day.
Mature to me means that the animal is fully grown. I would class the stag as 'a young stag' three or four years old. A mature stag is six or even seven years plus. A spiker is not a stag, it is a spiker till now and then it is a rising 2yr stag. I am always astounded how the current crop of fawns are fawns when they are running around but become 'yearlings' instantly when they are shot
I personally think deer numbers in certain areas are out of control. Game management in these areas is not needed at present. Shoot everything including fawns. If we don’t the next hot topic to piss and moan about will be the indiscriminate use of 1080
