G'day, As the title suggests.
I was down quad-biking a local river in Canterbury and stumbled accross plenty of sign.
Problem is its surrounded by farmland and not that far from a highway...but far enough.
Can anyone point me in the direction of the rules for taking a deer in a river. Or is it a simple no-go?

With out being sneeky and risking yr fal.Knock on the farmers door first.They might let you shoot on the or near the river boundry.But if the river bed is near the main centres and gets a bit of use i wouldnt bother.Drive and extra hour and get into the valleys and hills.I shoot near river bed edges,but close to the main divine,not close to state high one,main centres or farmers house.Look after yr fal.
To discharge a firearm anywhere in NZ you need the permission of the land owner/occupier, so if it’s some sort of public land you will need some sort of permit.
Penalty is up to $100,000 fine and 2 years jail iirc, so you definitely want your ducks in a row!
For most Canterbury rivers you can use a shotgun to hunt gamebirds. Other forms of shooting are not allowed. Ownership of river beds and surrounding areas is a real mixed bag. Some is local council, some is private, some is “water board”. Some is other govt dept.
You will need a 12g x 7x57 'drilling' and a game bird licence and some 'buck shot' to 'produce'. Hang the deer up and come back later with no gun to collect - I am told
It's not clear at all. I have looked at duck hunting and trout fishing opportunities in my area and can't work it out. Everything is fine until it's not.
Can you get non-toxic buckshot? Carrying lead shot within 200m of a waterway will also get you in trouble.Quote:

Being 20 at the time and prone to going off half cocked I made sure the ranger new how counter productive it was to stop me shooting cats where they had a pheasant release program ran by them . At 32 I understand it has to be one rule for all. On a side not I must have taken 30-40 cats with the hmr up their was good fun

Thanks for your input team.
Its obvious its loads of grey around what we can do and not.
For example, there is no issue hunting the likes of Rangitata and Macaulay and those types but not much around smaller rivers/streams.
I've messaged ECAN for some guidance. Surely there shoudl be some cut and dry rules for the land they manage.

Good luck. a few years ago I wanted to make sure I was OK to shoot some bunnies in a nearby riverbed as it was getting to be a plague of them.
first I spoke to DOC, who said they don't manage riverbeds, I should speak with fish and game.
fish and game said they only deal in fish and game birds not game animals, and I would need to talk to DOC
rinse and repeat a couple of times before I got too pissed off to carry on.
I'd love to have some clarification about taking deer in the likes of the rakaia river though so if you find anything out make sure to let us know

Ive sighted in rifle for years with a good solid backstop in riverbed or beside beach..... Im always aware of whats around or could be around so good solid backstop is vital..... the days of wandering where ever we like with rifle are going fast..far better to go knock on a few doors as ask,state your intentions and see how you go.... far better than getting back to wagon and finding a note to call into nearest police station,or worse still having knock on door in wee small hours to take away your guns...
I took my dogs to the rakaia for the pheasant "season" a few years back, they hit deer sign and didnt want to bother with pheasants after that :P
This thread is opening a big can of worms, I suggest stop commenting on it and it will go away, and hunting in riverbeds will carry on.
Doesn't matter what doc says, linz says F&G all it takes is one complaint to the police. Talk to local property owners first, then have a talk with the local police.
Agree you can't go passed asking the local/neighbouring landowner. You may even get the nod to go for a shoot if you're not a knuckle dragger...
That said, if you want to try and identify public land, go to wams.org.nz
If the river bed shows up as a colour, it's generally public land: pink/light blue = esplanade reserve (sort of like Queens chain); dark green and light green are public reserves or DOC land.
If you locate these coloured areas, and they're overlapping where you hope to hunt, right click your mouse over the area and a pop up box should appear with land title info. It will say if it's administered by DOC or your local council etc - and that should give you a steer on who to contact and ask about hunting permission.

Similar story.
ECAN told me they dont have any rules except for Regional Parks.
They told me to talk to DOC.
I know DOC dont manage this public land but sent them a message anyway.
I have sent message to DOC anyway but either don't expect a reply or one that they will be pulling fence pickets out their arse due to the said...fence sitting.
I decided to contact the Regional Council see what they say.
Last resort I will make contact with the adjoining land owners and ask them.
If still nothing, I will save my documented efforts and go for a look with a rifle.

I searched keywords - Hunting/Firearm/Gun/Game
Nothing.
Therefore I take that is Hunting is an acceptable recreational activity and good to go.
Theres is actually no law to say you cannot hunt on hydro waters.As long as you are carefull and use common sence.Abide by a few basic fire arm laws(distance from roads,farm buildings and high ways.Dont draw attention to your self.But id stick to the high country hydro waters for centre fire rifle use.

WAMS is a really good tool. Great for showing where "paper roads" exist too (pink lines).
I'd still inform anyone in the surrounds of my intentions though, even if you're legally entitled.
Just a quick question. Does anyone know what “reserve land” is technically speaking. Where I shoot on lake ellesemere its not Doc land its a piece of land thats classed as reserve land. I just remembered that when the move to lead was made we were still able to shoot lead as it wasnt classed as Doc land.We use steel now. thoughts.? Cheers in advance.
reserve land is sometimes under council control....... the wee dryland block I was trpping on has 4 ha of DOC and the rest is council land......and there is zero difference and DOC have nothing to do with its running.... there are many wee council reserves dotted around the place..I BELIEVE they were origonally there for firewood planting but somewhere along the way that plan got abandoned or someone started to realise the $$$ value ...some still grow trees,sometimes council might break even on them....some get sold off and swallowed into nearby farms.
There is Yarrs reserve on the end of Ellesmere next to the L11 river. It is a DOC reserve not council with predator trapping in progress. Alot of new planting was done 2-3 years ago. There is alot of willow clearing going on next to the L11 as well. Duck shooting occurs on the edge of the reserve.
A lot of Council reserves were for road metal. Most of the pine blocks will have a shingle pit in the middleQuote:
