Recent evening trip into tararua.

So I'm still new at this. Been out for about 4 solo hunts in the northern Tararuas following a lot of advice I've got off this site so thanks for that guys.
As I've mentioned befor I'm at home by myself most of the time with my young boys so when I got a night off at 6:30pm I charged off into the hills. I was hunting around the 2nd dam and was charging down the track to meet up with a stream I wanted to check out when after 5 mins from the car I heard and then saw the large arss of a deer that had seen me first turn around and move off up the hill. I'd didn't seem to be in to much of a rust so I gave it a few mins and headed down the track a few hundred mtrs then headed up the hill to see if I could catch site of it again. Nope didn't, and I don't know if I was wasting my time?
Any way at least now I'm seeing them and getting some good practice in following tracks, next day off will be in about 15 days so if anything eventful happens I'll let you all know.

awesome mate, iv seen the arse end of more deer than i can count haha, next time take it easy while youre heading to where ever and you might get a shot off.

That is soo cool, be ready all the time, and maybe not rush, I took a mate hunting and shot a deer he walked past not 20 sec earlier, look up,down and around. Cheeky beggers will be there

Nice one, I have a rule which is, always expect to see something when you least expect it, in other words if you drop your guard, one's going to be there. I have shot many deer as they are taking off in the bush by giving a loud whistle, often ( but not always ) they will stop and look back giving you a second or two to release some lead at them.

One of the last deer in the bush that comes to memory was legging it up an open Ponga gut, I gave a loud sharp whistle, the deer stopped immediately and looked back, it had eyes as big as saucers with a look on its face like "who did that" curiosity killed that deer.

Probably should a gone straight after it but quietly? Tho some times they can appear and dissappear from no where without a trace. Would be surprised if those deer around the dams get the odd spotlight either

I see a few guys up there spotlighting from the rd and through the forestry tracks up there. But I figure every other vehicle has a rifle in it and I've never seen an animal from the rd side. What I do find interesting is I've only ever seen two live possums up there and it could of been the same one.
I did go for I hike with the family and there were a heap of plucked bodies scattered around which was kinda shit.
