Hello everyone, I am looking for a good place to hunt in the Ruahines that will keep me occupied for 2 weeks.
Any suggestions on a hut or campsite?
I may fly in if it makes sense and plan to leave in about 5 weeks.
Cheers

Pm sent mate
I wouldn't stay anywhere for 2 weeks solid. Plan a route and stay along the way. Main ranges make for easy travel over decent distances and the further you get from the hut the better the hunting usually. That sort of time would be worth a W-E crossing.
You piss off your misses?
Kiritaki if you like bush hobbiting:thumbsup:
I thought about that but what do you do if you shoot something?
thebest thing I could recommend would be a shower when you get out!!
If you don't see at least a few deer per day on the main range you best take up golf, and for the first week and a bit shoot em with a camera to skite on here.
If you really are keen to fly it will be better to fly out than in. Call Chris Crosse before you go and he can pick you up from most places.
Thanks for your advice everyone. A few deer per day on the main range. Hmm sounds like high expectations. I am not much more than an armed tramper you know!
Sounds like a great idea tho mate.
Let us know your plans, That way if people are heading that way you can catch up and possibly get them to bring you in some luxuries fresh bread, bacon eggs etc.
Most of the ruhainies have cell phone reception so but a cheap phone ( non smartphone ) with extra long battery life and you will be away. Only have to have it on for an hour or so a night.
I would fly into Wakelings. You have got the river to hunt, and its a short trip to the tops. Then over to Crow if you want, and up to some more tops. Plenty of other huts to visit from Wakelings too.
Just relax into it. Think about it as being at home without your mother for 14 days. Bliss.
Its no big deal. Potter around, and enjoy your time. Be careful in the river if it comes up.
As an alternative, Kelly Knight hut. 2 sets of tops close. River. Fishing. Great place. Day trip or over night to Rangi hut and back.
Two weeks!!!! Take a video camera with extra batteries, and relive that shit for years to come. Awesome!!
And just sing out when the meats on the bush edge then go back in:thumbsup:
Well, if it was me I would go someplace with fishing as well for two weeks, not many rivers with trout in very far in to the park in the southern half, perhaps up in the Maropea, Whakaurekou river systems, nice country in there, I found trout below Maropea hut not above.
mind you that was twenty years ago now.
Take a small solar charger for your camera and large card capacity.
Extra pepper, it will keep flys of the meat.
Further north you go the less leather wood.
Sum aursum options in the kaweka and kaimanawa's as well.:)
enjoy your trip,
