    Rut pads in august?

Was hunting last weekend and found a fresh sika rut pad..

sat and gave a couple of single calls and mews. Sat for probably half an hr watching the area, with face veil etc on but had no joy.

Did i make a bad call in doing so? Is there anything I could have done differently? Has anyone shot rutting sika at this time of year before?

    Cheers

Its often a young fella that diddnt get a cuddle

You did the right thing as you never know where he is

It’s likely he’s shadowing a hind if he’s still feeling like that, she’s likely some distance away, usually lower down the hill than his rut pad

Sika hinds that mis on first heat come in again couple of months later. I have a nice head on my wall and he had four girls with him late July; several years ago.

We had a couple hee haws late July during a hunt and watched a stag rutting with a hind start of this August. Definitely still a chance but it’s significantly reduced as time goes on.

I heard a hee haw in early August years ago. Could have been another hunter but sounded like a real deer.
