Hey mate ,i was born and bred whakatane and heard a few stories bout sambar in the bop,my ex's father had alot out the back of his farm in kawerau which backed into the rotoma's
Said they were like horses haha
Few over the river round Te Mahoe ,be a good man that can carry 1 of those.
Most are on private or foresty land and can live very close to people. A mate can see between 20 - 40 any night he wants from his house with the spotlight but the boss wont allow any of the workers to shoot them.
Some of the locals at Matahina village use to dog them ,don't know if they caught any mind you.
Apparently they're pretty tough & not good eating .
You would be too if you had just been chased by dogs ;)
Big sneaky sausages, Ive been putting the word out trying to get onto them for a couple of years with no joy. Apparently a forest managed by Hancocks out Matahina has a few but its stitched up Maori land.
If you go across the dam the forestry on left ,isn't it private land on the right.
Could be wrong, knew some one use to hunt that area. While ago now though things change.
Apparently they tough when they haven't been dogged.
What you gonna do with 500lb of sausage meat Big foot?
Hunting permits use to be available for the Forestry, lot of pork out that way & reds.
I let this one go last week.

Good, let him go, let him grow
The missus and I were charged by a sambar stag today, and it was just like the old live capture days.
I grabbed him by the antlers and wrestled him to the ground. Sadly, his antlers came off in my hands and he got away.
Saves a big carry I guess.
