Sika Altitude ?

Howdy all.

I’ve got next weekend booked in, and I’m thinking of giving sika a go (have never hunted them before). I’d initially planned on chasing fallow but think the 14/15 probably a bit early for the rut, sika should be going?

I’m planning on looking through the Waimarino catchment from Kiko Rd, had an old timer tell me it was great when he was last here 20 years ago, so with a bit of luck I’ll encounter something. During the roar, are sika more likely to be on the flats, in the bush, or on the tops, or is it more a case of they are where you find them? I’ve read that they’re usually between 900-1100m asl, but not sure if this rings true for the roar.
While I’m at it, can anyone point me in the direction of a crash course in sika vocals, I.e when to single call, heehaw, mew, and what they all mean?

Sorry never had the pleasure of hunting Sika but there was a bread going on here that might be of help I'll see if I can find it.

It`s the same as hunting all deer, they will be up high so fly camp up on the high ground and hunt the creek heads. If you get a whistle the buggers got you pegged, so see if you can spot him/her. Always check the wind drift and hunt like a leopard, slowly and stop often, like the cowboy said to the Indian, how is it you are better hunters than us, Indian said white man walk heaps, look little , Indian walk little, look heaps. That's it, the mark one eye ball, but be sure it`s a deer.

Thanks crew. The codger who pointed me to the Waimarino hadn’t been there for 20 years, but he would be about 70 now, so I stand by the phrase “old timer”!

Fallow are going now man. Had 3 cranking this morning. But I’ll be chasing sika next weekend too.......

Oh, I didn’t put a ballot in so problem solved

Kiko rd is a bit different now, bit more over grown, many of the reds that were around and were easier to hunt have been poisoned or shot so the clearings have all but disappeared.

No deer up Kiko Rd. Better just stay home. No deer at all.

There was a shed load of sign just off the track when I went for a little wander in August last year but been 1080 since then
