Omar tops - Actually just seen the booking.
Take a 20L container of water with you, could be a bit early for the roar in there but you never know.
yeah man, ya never know... 14th april last year was too late for the reds for me. where are the sika hanging pre roar ? do they hold up in scrape pads in open tops aswell as bush etc 20kg per person, or 20kg per couple ? were going in for a week.
If you take a plastic 20L container you can use that for your camp water, and if you get some rain catch it with a tarp or something and top it up.
You can drop down to water at the bottom of the first saddle (between Ngakawekaiti + Omar tops proper) or directly out from the campsite to the west.
Loads of open country to the north all the to the far end of the Te Puke tops, But don't right off the small area to the south either as i've seen and shot deer on the south side of Ngakawekaiti.
Herbs creek is a popular spot for bush hunting (Pukeohikarua creek) and is easy to access off the saddle between the Omar tops & the Te Puke tops.
I think you might be a bit early for the roar but you should see plenty of animals as that spot doesn't get a lot of pressure.
Bringing this up again, is a 500m capable rifle enough here it would a longer legged one be better.
That would be plenty long enough, the stags will be in the bush unless you call them up or they follow their ladies out into the open.
The dates he's going they will be, aside from the southern end of Ngakawekaiti which is bluff country it's all pretty easy country to drop into the bush on both sides.
I'd be travelling the tops listening for territory calls and then i'd drop down on them, it could also be a tad early maybe but that's a lottery in itself.
Engage with them at 50m or less in the bush and you'll be all the richer for it. Not to mention become a better Sika Hunter
PS.... nice Sika stag all the same![]()
