    Sika Roar

The question is...How long does the Sika roar go on for.??
when does it start? when does it finish. Up to when would you likely get a stag to reply to your
    call.??

Sika roar can go for months if the hinds are cycling .Some stag have been heard in early March form a single call to a roar and have also been heard roaring up to July or later . Depends on the stag . A young stag may answer where an old stag may not . The old stag may circle to get your wind first before approaching you . To chase the big stags you need the height or the rain to your advantage and watch the wind carefully .Some hunters are lucky to walk on to a stag by chance . From now on the stags should get easier to hunt and Hot Water Springs Puketitiri would be a good place for a look .Makino Stream is also a good place to hunt up the guts I would fly camp for a few days

    Good Hunting

Neil Philpott says on one of his Sika dvd`s that he regulary roars stags right through to November, and I believe most of his hunting was/is in Kaimanawas

    Thanks for you replies guys.
I am going for a look see this week some time, maybe go in through Clements / Te Iringa Track! just a Day hunt. If i get a stag replying that will be a bonus.
I would be just as happy with a hind, yearling.

    Cheers

And a few random vocals, single calls, alarm squeals and the super rare cackle.

Rutting Sika Deer (Denmark 2008) - YouTube

The cackle is rarely heard, and sounds like a witch cackling/laughing, and it fair makes the hairs on yer neck stand straight up.

I have only heard it a handful of times, and then only when roughly 30 or more Sika were within eyesight of each other on private property.
