Yeah Bulls can be tough. Ive never had many bang/flops with them. But also due too their mane, I dont take neck or other risky shots. I tend towards mid and forward shoulder.

Bull Tahr, shot 40 meters, mid shoulder, quartering away steep angle second shot, neck 3rd shot. went 20 meters. 130gr ttsx. This bull probably didn't need the 2 extra shots but due to proximity to river and that it was downhill, it was a case of make sure he's down as quick as possible.

Interesting thread. Makes me wonder about the odds of recovery in bush country, and whether we bush hunters could do a similar thread on it. I.e. dropped on spot - all good. Goes 30m - you will probably find it, maybe 90% of the time? Goes 50+m, the odds are starting to drop. Goes >100m, I'd guess that the odds are now under 50%, without a dog anyway. Depends on blood trail, whether you know the direction of travel, and how much time you have a keep looking. I lost a decent sika stag which I'm pretty sure was dead within 50m in real thick stuff, but only had 40minutes to look before having to bail to get the chopper. Got about half of a GPS grid search done......Depends on the size of deer as well, easy to miss a sika in a tussock hole.....If you don't find it, you don't know how far it went, but I reckon you often know its probably less than 150m if you see lung blood etc.

Anyone got thoughts on the odds of recovery in bush?

Mines just on 17 months, discard from a breeder, he's not done much hunting BUT what he has done, he's on the ball, he knows as soon as the gun comes out that it's time to get his game face on, chamber a round and he falls back behind with little prompting, looking forward to getting out with him a lot more in the coming months, having a dog on a hunt is a whole new facet

Oh hell yes, I've had border collies in the past who need LOTS of "work" Vizsla's are, I've decided, like BC's on coke! Also, Velcro, if I'm working outside he's never far away, even when he's shivering under his coat, he won't go inside without me taking him there. When I'm at my desk he'll be by my feet or the head will be resting on top of my thigh. When people arrive, he starts barking, I start yelling, chaos ensues, I love it! Very very awesome dogs

Thanks some stunning scenery and photography. Great composition and care taken there. Doubt a vizsla would lower itself to prison work. If it did it would make too many friends on the inside.

Ive got 4 dogs, and a German missus, So none of them are allowed to sleep outside. My older bitch doesn't like the Vizla, and so the Vizla spend half the day in her face on point, asking why she'ss not liked?

If the Vizlas can't sleep on top of me while im on the couch, she finds one of the other dogs to sleep on.

Life is just so much better with a dog around. Velcro....you have just described Poppy to a T.

Nice! I notice the ranges animals were shot decreased markedly with the change in calibre and presume that's a conscious decision to use the cartridges within their best parameters?

When you say through the shoulders, Is that a bone breaking shot similar too what Id call a forward shoulder shot?

Pretty much anywhere in the shoulder, some break the bone some just miss the bone but all normally puncher the lungs.

I haven't shot anything passed 330 meters with the 223 and I make sure I have a perfect rest before taking those long shots.

I only use the 223 now as its so nice to shoot with no recoil, the 7mm rem mag may not make it out again and may even be sold some time down the track.

Well done on your animals and good records kept, I find keeping records helps you to narrow down what works best.

I still think the hornady 62gr SP's take some beating as they are so accurate and just do the business.
