    South Island Fly In

Missed out on a Wapiti block but still want to do a fly in mission with my old man down south for the roar next year. Any suggestions on where to look?

Want to fly in and not tied to any specific areas. Places I was looking are Southern Fiordland, Haast River, Mid Landsbrough areas.

Ideally somewhere we can set up a good base camp and spider web our way around the area. Looking at doing about a week or so out there.

Don’t need anybody’s honey holes, just a rough area to have a look at.

Suggestions on who to fly with are welcome too!

Can't hurt to get in touch with the DOC office in Haast and let them know your situation, if anybody pulls out of a roar block they may be kind enough to let you know. Haast Heli services/James Scott are both good options that I've flown with before, and the Haast river public hunting block/front country has plenty of likely looking tops. I reckon if you rang James Scott and asked for some suggestions on anywhere between the Whataroa and Haast he should be fairly helpful and not likely to drop you too near to any other hunters. How fit and capable is your old man?

There are still some restricted blocks near Queenstown that are available. They do not get booked out as they are very hard to get to by foot. But I have heard they hold some good animals if you are willing to fly-in. Loads of local heli providers.
