Ok. I have spoken to DoC Nelson Lakes and they say WARO are supposed to notify the district office if they are going to be working in an area. They have not had any notification for the ballot areas for over two years so if someone has been in there they shouldn't have been. The deer numbers for last years ballot seemed pretty high. Here is a summary of deer seen/shot for the 2021 spring ballot and 2022 roar. These are the average number of animals seen/shot by each party. They have increased the length of the ballot period to 6 day this year too.

Check out Murchison Helitours facebook page. Rob has put up a bit of recent footage when flying over the area.

Jeez that's a mob and a half. Not too sure if that was sensible posting that on social media.

Yeah. True. I guess he though it was good advertising to get people flying in.

I seem to recall there were only 8 blocks back then?
Try to contact the Nelson branch of the NZDA. They have run the last couple of ballots.

As Shearer says, contact Nelson Branch NZDA. They can probably give you the info. If no luck there you could try David david@solumconsulting.co.nz He organises deer control hunts in NLNP. He can probably help. As an aside. Rob Hunt, owner/operator of Murchison Helicopters is a good operator and good guy. He flys the area regularly and knows where the animals are and where good campsites are for prevailing weather conditions. If he’s too expensive for you there’s always the old fashioned way of getting into blocks, walk, like we all used to. Now I’ve debated with myself whether to post this but here goes. I took part in a deer control hunt a few weeks ago. My hunting buddy and I left two very promising velvet stags for some lucky hunter to maybe score if they’re lucky. They were in the Nardoo Basin. Good luck to anyone who puts the effort in to accessing this block, beautiful bit of countryside.
