I spotted a deer on Monday this week out on the river flats near the bush edge, was about 400m away and I had the river between us, so off with the gummies and crossed two parts of the river in my socks keeping obstacles between me and the animal, it wasn't lifting it's head so couldn't see what it was but it was tall and big, beautiful dark hide. By the time I got a lot closer it was gone, may have scented me and it was too dark to see much...plus I had to re cross the river to get back.
Yesterday, I ventured to the same place maybe half an hour earlier and started glassing...sure enough this thing casually walked out the bush and started feeding on the river bed. I was just before where I crossed the river the day before so was within 320m of it, a stag...tall animal with long antlers, I think maybe an 8 pointer. I thought about crossing the river again to get closer and ended up deciding to lob a round at it to no avail.
Today's plan is chuck a round or two down the barrel at 100 (which I've done recently so know where it's at at a hundy), then at 200m and then see where the shot is at 300m. It'll give me the drop and show me how far I over dialed.
Then I'm going back early this avo and will cross the river and will lie in wait...I'll let you know if he's a creature of habit and comes out a 3rd time
This sounds really ethical. Just shoot with a guesstimated dope and hope you hit it
You’ve probably hit it poorly and it’s run off and died somewhere.
