On a recent walk up mackenzie way, I was sitting on a ridge taking eveything in when a flash caught my eye, looking through the binos I seen a hunter walking down a opposite ridge a good 2 or so ks away. His barrell/scope flashed a few more times while watching him. It was quite obvious to the naked eye. Do you reckon these shiney rifles could be giving the hunter away to the odd animal? Doesn't bother me as im more worried about my gingerness/whitebait legs giving me away.
There have been times I've suspected that a shiny barrel was responsible for spooking rabbits as I brought the rifle up to shoot. But I guess you can never really be sure!
The norm now is the mat finish on ss barrels , I always had mat black insulation tape on my barrel , as did most .
I would have thought that it would be more likely the flash of light was reflected off the optics than the stainless barrel. They do stick out like hairy dogs nuts though..
If you walk down a ridge in open country you stick out like dogs balls anyway. I all ways try to carry my gun at waist height so it doesn't stick up like an aerial.Quote:

Scopes can be bad and also stainless. depends what your hunting. In the bush not a problem. Tahr/Chamois hunting on the tops and its a problem. Nothing the goood old insulation tape wont fix.
