Thread: Stewart Island - Gear you wished you took

Hey guys, Im off to Stewart Island for 9 days on the 1st of Feb (none of us have been before) North Tiko.

We think we have most things covered in regards what to take, but im keen to hear what you have taken that you were pleased you did, or what things you'd take if you went again.

Hire a Dinghy

Cheers, we have arranged two, 8 of us ;-)

I think we had everything to be honest, dive gear, fishing gear, motor and dinghy, rifles, beer.

I would take a solar shower if you have one, some good deck chairs and some comfy shoes. You can live in luxury down there especially if you are chattering a boat to you're block. Even things like a bbq make life good.

WHAT......no 'blow up' entertainment......

How much do you want to spend on each trip .depends on what you take . If you plan ahead the trip can be a lot cheaper. Prices for total trip to the island and back can be as low as $1000 from the north island and up to $3000 all included .

Yep i have two model 7's, but the bolts go straight back in them after cleaning, so wont be mixing them up ;-)

Sure will be getting plenty of pics and some video, wanting to put together a trip video afterwards.

Make sure you keep your vid cam handy around camp. Be sneaky about it 'cos some of the best stuff can be spontaneous bullshit (true lies) when no-one thinks you are recording. I'm envious - have fun.

Mate you should biff me in your pack everyone needs a Gibo with them

I've going to South Pegasus in late Feb. We have a couple of dingys sorted and still considering a larger boat instead of one of these.

Solar Shower sounds like a good option too.

ive never been there but ive read a few hunting stories where they've nearly run out of food

If you run out of food there you are doing something wrong!

Take an alarm clock and insect repellant.

I'd suggest a quick read of the relevant chapter of Greg Fagg's Hunting under the Southern Cross.

His methods of picking up whitetail are quite ingenous as they are cunning little buggers at hiding in those ferns and playing possum as you walk past. Second thing I'd say other than good sized dinghy is some snorkeling gear as the Scallops in some of those Sandy bottomed inlets are awesome and not too deep. Lastly, a handheld GPS or similar as its really easy to get turned around in a circle down there especially if without realizing you've worked yourself down onto a headland and can hear the sea.
