Still Lots to Learn and Fun to Have

As my daughters and I progress and learn more about the art of hunting and shooting, keen if is anyone willing to share some of their knowledge or tips especially chasing deer and pigs.

We are all still in the very much amateur league and after reading more and more then share with my Girl Team.

What are your top tips or suggestions shooting, e.g. best grip or stance to hold the rifle (using a 308) squeeze don’t pull, control your breathing, etc.

And the challenge is to keep it fun so they continue to enjoy the hard slog up hills then all going well carrying the prize home.

Have also read Tracking and Hunting Deer in New Zealand which is a great read.

    Cheers heaps in advance

Best6 suggestion from me, being a relative newcomer, find a good "how to shoot resource, such as everydaymarksman.co (and no that's not a typo) read up, as you have done on hunting/tracking your species of choice, use the doc website to find likely reserves, do some homework on google earth to spy likely spots that may hold/attract your prey.....then get out there and do it, there aint no shortcut...also, get to know people on here and read the posts, it's amazing hpw much knowledge you'll gain just from reading hunt/shoot/gun posts...and if you're fortunate, some old greybeard may well drag you along on a hunt....but you have definitely gots to be patient whilst you build your other skills .....obviously all of the above is IMO from IME

I think of finding deer the same as I think about finding good surf.

You can't just turn up at the beach and expect there to be waves, nor can you turn up on a mountain and expect there to be deer. If you find the right terrain features, pick the right weather and get there at the right time of day, you're more likely to be successful. Basically stack the odds in your favour.

How old are your daughters? My daughter is still a long way off from using the 308, but have a nice sized kids 223 and what a difference it has made to her confidence.

You guys do realise it's dead easy to download the 308 to say 7.62x39mm---30/30 levels so recoil is next to nothing.

@Micky Duck yip but I don't reload and the stock on my 308 is just way too big for her.

At the start of each hunt, try a little bit of dry firing.Just to remind them of the feel of the 308 trigger and where it breaks.

Cheers everyone for the ideas, yip learning as we go and getting to know the signs and understand the area we get to hunt on. Slow and Steady (that’s me anyway on a good day)

What started the thoughts was someone discussing how they position their front arm support to the rifle. The girls are 17 and 16 so ok to use the rifle which is great and learnt how to gut and skin the deer.

Yip Trout great idea, we normally stop off at the shooting range in Murch before heading to our spot which refreshers the feel of everything.

Cheers Happy Jack, we are lucky to have an area we can use so no drops going on there but do try to keep up to date on the 1080.

    Again, thanks everyone
