Thread: Sunrise hut

As title says im keen to take my two oldest boys up to sunrise on the 30th during the week just for an overnighter,my 5 year old is energetic but only in spurts of insperation! my oldest is a mountain goat so he's sweet ive had a look at sunrise an as i want to take the fire poker will i be crowded out by tree hugger's? should i try some of the other hutts around the area? give me some helpfull advice boy's and girl's my boys would love to see and animal and i just want to take them into a hutt for the night somewere excitng for youngin's cheers in advance.

Only walk a 5 year old as far as you can carry them back

If its your first trip out with young'uns take the older boy and see how that goes before trying to take both!

ive taken both on day hunts the older boy goes for ever my five year old is fit as a fiddle im just keen to know what the track is like to sunrise.

Longview is an easy walk and probably the easiest access to the Ruahine tops that I know of when you don't have a rotor wing.

Nice clean hut with a great view, i have shot a few animals there that had legs bones healed from a break proving there are some real nasty areas to traverse if you get way down off the tops.

The Spanish needle grass is fierce in areas, but lots of animals for a Long Range Hunter.

That being said there will be 75 new hunters/Forum lurkers there tomorrow --Start driving now Neckshot.

PS. The shingle drive in through the farm is spectactular for its views, and there is a steep pinch if rough/rain rutted would be a real test of your driving ability to get a front wheel drive car up it.

Waipawa Forks is a easy trip up the river. Same car park as Sunrise. The huts a bit weird though having no water. Good place to take a young fella though without much slog and a good chance of a deer early morning up towards the saddle with the open river flats stretching a long way. Don't take a dog though.

The Sunrise track is a doddle too. Even 7mmSAUM could get up there. The local MTB club did a ride up there the other day that's how open it is.

cheers boys waipawa might be the go as im keen to be away from the crowds even though its midweek boys love creeks and river's so win win really.

funny you say that i spoke to a guy who hunted around there a few months ago and shot an old stag with a fused leg bone.

Have ya done the rain guage yet? Seamac is a bloody nice Hut.

yep done rain gauge hunted thru to the headwaters and almost got bluffed out!!! still more to explore up there aswell.

Sunrise could be very busy this time of the year.

I believe theres a full time Hut warden in residence over the summer.

I'd head for Longview or Waipawa forks but even these can be popular huts this time of year.

Happy Daze or Awatere could be another good choice but I'm not sure about your 5 year old making it.

Could always head over the back of sunrise through the saddle and over to Top Maropea hut
