I was told yesterday that the 'culling' would be done with Buckshot. Is this correct ??. If they are shot with buckshot the pattern at 50 -60 metres will be pretty open and a lot of animals will be shot with only one or two pellets - in the arse or the guts and escape to die slowly with a lot of suffering, certainly raising welfare issues.

No. The pilots are seasoned venison pilots. They will hunt them like they do deer.
Max effective range for buckshot is 20-25 yards. 30 is even a stretch.
They will no doubt have a rifle on board as well.

The word is that the first crew out last week did 6hrs flying in the upper Rakaia for 160 tahr shot. Going to be an expensive operation for Doc at that rate.
Shut up, get out & start pushing!

Just got back from a couple days tahr hunting in an area that has obviously been culled pretty heavily. 2 days hunting seen 6 tahr and of the 6 there was only 1 nanny. They were all pretty much spread out as individuals. Found 7 dead tahr while walking around and one of them looked like it had been shot with buckshot. Of the 7 dead tahr we found 6 of them were bulls with one of them being around 11 inches

Did you take photos ?? It would be worth reporting this to GAC - just google them and ask them to give DOC a 'please explain'

I agree on the 25 yards and that is my point, any shot at further could end up wounded. I would have thought that using professional venison recovery teams was logical, and shooting with 223's

Yep took photos. The tahr have been dead for a while so I’m guessing it was from when they culled 4000 earlier in the year

Rumour has it that the cull has been stopped indefinitely. The loss of those 2 senior DOC workers has majorly thrown a spanner in the works.

    Sounds about right.

Then they can just cull indefinitely as they haven't reached the numbers yet
