If Tahr are so rare they must be located and shot from the air, do we really need a cull? Tragic waste of human lives in the pursuit of Eugenie's wet dream.

I don't think being rare or hard to find is the problem or the reason for a heli based Cull I think it is considered the most economical way to cull them in the numbers they are trying to achieve due to remoteness and terrain.
I agree its a tragic waste of life, even though I may not necessarily agree with the cull I can understand the reasons for choosing to cull them from the air.

From past Forest Service culling operations it was found that they cannot be controlled by foot hunters alone. This from my uncle who tailed about 8000 from memory. By all accounts they do concentrate in areas and chew them out to bare ground.

They need culling. Always have done. But it needs to be managed more appropriately, and areas of higher density targeted, rather than an all out extermination operation. Helicopters really are the most efficient tool in doing so. Tahr can cover ground so fast and they live in places foot hunters rarely visit or are able to access.

100% agree @JoshC ... but I fear this crucial part is not being followed or agreed to by Sage & DOC "it needs to be managed more appropriately, and areas of higher density targeted, rather than an all out extermination operation."

Easy access country for foot hunters and the outcome .... nigh on extermination.

The fear is real mate, tip of the iceberg I fear. It's happening over in Aussie too, government wasting tax payer money culling Sambar instead of easing hunting regulations in National Parks and utilizing a resource. Fucking nuts given the worlds population is growing, we have a global food shortage, and valuable protein rich meat is being left to rot on a hill because minority Eco-extremist government parties are getting to call the shots on something because they're not interested in it.

Quite the opposite. There are so many that the best way to control them is shooting from the air.

Yes that was the case and when the choppers started we foot shooters were told to push them higher up so they could
be mopped up. At first the Thar would try and out climb the machines anyway, they were buggered in deep snow.
As time went on they turned and headed for cover long before the sound of rotors could be heard, they wised up eventually.
It was and will be an awful waste of top meat, far to many all the same.

Just found out that one of the chaps involved in the crash was an old mate, way back in the Forest Service days. He was a trainee woodsman back then.He spent every opportunity with us hunters. He lived to hunt..RIP old mate.
    Condolences.

This is becoming all to familiar , how many choppers have gone down in the last 3-4 years , NO DISRESPECT TO THOSE INVOLVED AT ALL , but last I heard they were recovering Tahr carcasses ? how does a 59 & 63 yo do that , perhaps my mind is a little cynical but a pilot and 2 shooters does spring to mind, interesting enough I see the article mentions a new 500 was on lease so some truth to two new 500,s for the cull , again NO disrespect to those involved in this tragedy but perhaps there's a few reality's coming to light , maybe the 100,000 rounds of ammo to cull 17500 Tahr is pretty close to the mark also , so near on 6 rounds per animal , iv been around long enough to no once these consents get granted away you go , anyone complains Oh they are allowed to do that , unless there is someone sitting in the chopper counting numbers ....how many have they shot ? id really like to hear the ministers take on that.

Most here will agree that a new management plan and cull needs to be made and done. What I can't understand is why DOC seems to be culling the most easily accessible hunter friendly blocks and leaving the hard to reach blocks out? That's just nuts

    No disrespect... But.

I knew Scott. He was fitter and more able to move carcasses than 99% on here. Also a real hunter. Did somenamazing stuff. Lived a few lives. Great dog trainer. A bunch of dogs from him went to control mongoose in Japan.
Designed a new trap that worked exceptionally well on cats.
She you say no disrespect then imply disrespectful things i shake my head but then I'm guessing you didn't know him so have reason to believed he was to be respected. And as for Wallis. Sounds like the guy was a pretty slick pilot.
As for you rounds theory. You always buy over what's need for a job, especially if you might be doing more work for the contract later. Working overseas shooting a hundred goats I sent 400rnds ahead of me. Why... Because I would been seen to be an idiot if numbers or contract changed it every hinged on ammo numbers.

Anyway. RIP guys. Even though I want to see a more reasonable management plan I appreciate the lives you guys were living. Some people live long and do nothing. You guy should be proud of what you achieved.
