Tahr Trip for 2015

Next year I plan to find some time to head south and finally chase some Tahr (who knows we might even convince Rushy to bring his walking stick (sorry canon) as well)
I know I can bludge a bed in Timaru which really dictates the area to be hunted, what I really need to know is what time of year should I be looking at, and for the guys who regularly shoot them on the eastern side of the Alps what sort of shooting distances are typical? Any other advise will be appreciated. I have worked around Timaru and Waimate in the past so am well acquainted with human hazards of the district :D

@Nibblet can you get them from your family's hut in the hills? Oh and have you had the escalator installed yet?

Not sure if they are that far south, our place sits right at the bottom of the feral tahr range. Last time I was talking to doc dude he said there were a couple, few chamois and reds around but that was a while ago.

I plan on going in next few months so will let you know

November -December they're down low looking for spring growth.

I agree with Brian. He and I have had some great trips at that time of the year.
I enjoy the winter too, but it can be a bit tough going if you aren’t alpine experienced, because they are very high then.

The ranges are mostly exaggerated and over-talked. 250 yards is about average in my experience. I’ve shot plenty under 200 yards, and have often just used my .243.

If a trophy is really important to you a big banger that will reach out will be an advantage, but the downside is you will find that the number of animals you can’t recover will increase.

Here’s a typical east coast spring hunt. A lot steeper than it looks though:

I have been waiting for someone to chime in with a poo four three comment but no one seems to be doing that Neckshot. Maybe they have all learned what a good mid range calibre it is.

So they don't always run around on the mountain tops and have bulletproof fur coats? Thank god for that cause I'm only planning to take the 6.5mm :)

Depends if you're after any tahr or a trophy.

The aim is for something that I won't look at later and go "why did I shoot that".
So if I didn't see something I like I wouldn't shoot. Not expecting to go down and come home with a 13"+ head or anything like that (but I wouldn't complain)

Tahr meat is pretty damned nice though.

Go in with the right group of people and it won't even matter if we don't see anything ;)
Did a trip years ago into Fiordland. If I gave the facts it would look like a disaster; but it was a fantastic trip with mates.

The last time I shot a tahr, there were a pick of 30 to choose from less than 30 metres from me I took a nanny for meat, made it into patties and sent it to the north island .

Dealing with that 1 farmer gave me access to a lot more farms from Peel Forest to Waimate
