yup, Aussie authorities are just a pain in the arse! Expect some drama, but no problems coming home. If you are transferring to an internal flight, allow extra time to deal with the paperwork, and more than likely staff that are ignorant when it comes to firearms.
Friends of mine took their shotguns over to compete in a well-known international competition two years ago and found the Australian import and export process to be rather diabolical and long-winded. I'm pretty sure the import process took a good 1.5 hours and that meant missing ground transport arrangements but the day of departure was a story of its own. I recall it took more than 2 hours to sort things out and although they gave themselves plenty of time they still had to run to catch the flight. The problem was getting duck-shoved around different departments in different parts of the building... getting papers signed in triplicate, stamped by different agencies... in typical Australian fashion.
Do your research well and go prepared. Also be prepared to be mucked about and give yourself plenty of time. Hours, not minutes.

yup, i've done it to go and compete at Belmont.
I have a document somewhere that details the paperwork process, will dig it out and send to you.
each state over there has their own firearms laws, so flying into one state and not moving the rifle between states makes your life a lot easier.
getting the rifle out of NZ is easy
getting it into Aus involves some paperwork, but nothing major
getting it out of Aus involves a shitload more paperwork, and a visit to Customs
back into NZ is piece of piss, cop tends to meet you as you get off the plane, you are escorted thru customs and he checks the serial no, all good.
Also be aware of our wonderful gun laws no suppressors, cat c license for semi autos pumps etc
A lot of paperwork, you should be able to download it from the Queensland Police website, start the paperwork trail approx. 4 months out from going over. You will need an export permit from Aussie customs, you can get that info from there website. Getting them in and out of NZ is the easy part.
Queensland Police will issue you with a temporary firearms license and B709 entry/exit permit, you'll need to get onboard with Aussie Customs and apply for an export number etc.
Don't forget to apply to NZ police for an import permit - that's the easy part, and what ever you do don't hand carry any firearm part as hand carry, bolt knob or anything.
Apply to whatever airline you are flying with well in advance and get there approval, print off several hardcopies and take with you, don't rely on anything verbal, make sure you have everything in writing.

Get a loaner over there if you can Hamish, as you see it's a mighty hassle.
Its a pain in the arse, Im not sure what the rules are about loaning but it is worth looking into-I have several rifles in that state and would be happy to loan you one if we can tick the legal boxs
sheesh, i had a feeling it was a pain. all gd, there is a rifle available but its always nice having your won!!!

In NSW which I think is the same as qld, cat a license is rimfire,shotgun and rimfire shotgun combos, cat b is bolt action or lever action centrefire and centrefire shotgun combos, cat c is semiauto and pump rimfire with mag less than 10 rounds, semiauto and pump centrefire with mag of 5 rounds. No suppressors, length of firearm over 75 cm or goes into a cat h which is pistols etc.Quote:
