With the roar drawing to a close, but stags still sporting hard antler, what do the trophy hunters on here do to target stags? Sika, in particular, but Reds too. Is it a numbers game and you hunt just the the same but know that if you see hinds all day soon enough you'll see a stag or are there ways to specifically target stags?
Where do they hold up etc

I think it is quite well known that Neil Philpott, well known Sika hunter, roars stags in right through to november.
Red stags will be trying to put some condition on after the roar and can be found on the tops well after the girls have all headed down to warmer country.
keep an eye on Sika stags through to roughly sept 20th when they cast their antlers, and if you see something you like then send to the chiller.
Around May 10th red stags come out to put on condition after the roar and June 1st for Sika stags, this is a far better time to hunt them than the roar and once they are fat again make much better table fare.
Find the food, find the deer.
I found that with the reds you also need to find sunlight in the am and pm early but have a smaller time window that they hang out up my way atleast

The red stags are feeding up big time over the next month, you will see plenty out in the open if the weather conditions are in their favour. A lot less pressure on them as the once-a-year wannabe wankers have all retreated back to suburbia and many serious hunters are switching to ducks & pheasants for the next month.
Shooting for meat [stag] is a waste of time till the condition builds up, good for heads though.
I have never been able to imitate a Sika stag so I rely on using a bleater that is somewhere near the sound of a hind or fawn...those stags cant help themselves, they just got to come for a look...admittedly I have never shot a decent Sika stag, so may only work on the younger one's.
In my observations, the smart aleck Jap is up for anything until his antlers drop...
