    Taupo and around

In the new year we will be relocating from the main land (Otago) to Kuratau - Taupo to be closer to family for a bit.

Looking for recommendations for spots to get out in the bush, take my boys and fill the freezer. Not looking for your secret spots - just a bit of a place to start.

I plan to join the local NZDA, to use the range and meet people.

    Cheers,
    Ross

Time to start the addiction that is chasing Sika haha, lots of easy access into the Kaimanawas, or one of my favourite areas to hunt the southern parts of Whirinaki forest

Plus Tongiriro and Pureora. You will be surrounded by great and varied hunting areas.

Hi Liquidasset, I just recently moved to taupo also. I've been wanting to head into southern whirinaki but have been put off by a few warnings about parking etc. Have you had anything out of the ordinary happen or any pointers mainly about areas to avoid?

Hey mate I recently moved here also. I have found its pretty hard to get people to open up about where to go etc (totally understandable) but they will point you in a general direction. Then its best to check some maps/google earth then just get out for a walk. Some spot will turn out to be shit and others you'll stumble across deer 100m from the truck. Hardest part is choosong where to go as theres so many options. Give me a pm when you move here if you want someone to go search new areas.

Hey mate, we normally use Plateau Rd carpark or Pukahunui Rd. Never had an issue touch wood. Even managed to leave my wallet in the wagon on a several night away trip and was still safe and sound when we got back. Have heard of issues around the top at River Rd and Okahu Rd to come in from the north but again we have never had an issue.

There’s scumbags everywhere so it’s always a bit of a roll of the dice leave a car anywhere these days but if you’re concerned about leave a vehicle there are a couple operators that offer shuttles like Whirinaki Adventures where you can park at their yard and they drop you off.
